Hot 100 Overview: Week of March 20, 2021 - Drake (1)

Drake (1)
Hey everybody! It was an extremely active week this week, so I won't stretch out this intro too much. Just one thing: I've decided to close submissions for Blogger March Madness 2021 on Sunday, so make sure you get your submissions in by then! New music on this post from Drake, Justin Bieber, Juice WRLD and more!

The Top 10
#1: What's Next - Drake (DEBUT) [1st week at #1] {1 week}
#2: Wants and Needs - Drake/Lil Baby (DEBUT) [#2] {1 week}
#3: Lemon Pepper Freestyle - Drake/Rick Ross (DEBUT) [#3] {1 week}
#4: Leave The Door Open - Silk Sonic (DEBUT) [#4] {1 week}
#5: drivers license - Olivia Rodrigo (-4) [8 weeks at #1] {9 weeks}
#6: Up - Cardi B (-4) [#2] {5 weeks}
#7: Save Your Tears - The Weeknd (-1) [#4] {13 weeks}
#8: Blinding Lights - The Weeknd (-5) [4 weeks at #1] {66 weeks}
#9: 34+35 - Ariana Grande (-5) [#2] {19 weeks}
#10: Mood - 24kGoldn/iann dior (-3) [8 weeks at #1] {31 weeks}

This top 10 is much more active than it's been the past few weeks, so that's good. Obviously the big story of the week is the three Drake songs debuting at the top. I'll get onto my opinion on those later, but this is also the first time in history that the entire top 4 has been debuts, which is crazy. drivers license fell to #5, but it could go back to #1 unless Leave The Door Open or Up go to #1 because of the Grammys. Also, it's absolutely ridiculous that Blinding Lights is still here.

Debuts

#1: What's Next - Drake

So with the release of Scary Hours 2, every song from it debuts at the top of the chart, which is absolutely insane. Anyways, this is the single from it, What's Next and it's our new #1. This song's pretty good. Drake actually sounds like he cares about the song, which is nice. The hook is also decently catchy. My only real problem with this is that the production can get kind of annoying because it's repetitive. But that's about it, this is still good.

#2: Wants and Needs - Drake/Lil Baby

The second song from Scary Hours 2 is next and it debuts at #2 this week. I only really have two problems with this. The first is that at the start of the song, Drake is really off time with the music and the second thing is that Lil Baby doesn't sound great in the hook. It's definitely not his worst performance, though, so it's fine. Plus, he sounds good in his verse, kind of like how he sounded in The Bigger Picture, which is my favourite song from him. This is good and I can actually see this sticking around for a while.

#3: Lemon Pepper Freestyle - Drake/Rick Ross

This is my favourite song from Scary Hours 2. Both artists sound really good here and the sample actually works really well with the song. That's it, just a solid song.

#4: Leave The Door Open - Silk Sonic

I'm pretty sure everybody knows that this song exists at this point. I never really expected it to debut so high though and yeah, if Scary Hours 2 came out a week later, this would've been the #1 song. Anyways, I think this song's alright, Bruno sounds really good here, but it's only slightly boring and it doesn't feel like it should be on the radio. Still solid though and I definitely don't hate it.

#26: Hold On - Justin Bieber

This was a promotional single from Justin Bieber's new album, Justice, which came out yesterday. This definitely isn't the best of the singles so far, but it's not the worst either. He sounds good here and the melody's good. My only issue with it is that I think there should've been a little more production in the chorus, as it's really just the bassline and I think it would have benefited from some more production. This may not stay here for much longer.

#34: Real As It Gets - Lil Baby/EST Gee

This is definitely the worst Lil Baby song that debuted this week. He doesn't really sound good here at all and while I think the production's pretty good, his voice just brings it down a lot. EST Gee has a pretty good verse here, though.

#54: Beautiful Mistakes - Maroon 5/Megan Thee Stallion

This really didn't debut as high as I expected it too. It kind of sucks too, because I do like this song. I already talked about this song literally today, so all I'll say is that I hope it sticks around for a bit and does better than Nobody's Love did.

#74: Hellcats & Trackhawks - Only The Family/Lil Durk

This is a pretty bad song. There's way too much stuff happening in the production that it almost feels crowded. Lil Durk also doesn't sound that good here and nothing about this works. Next.

#97: Life's A Mess II - Juice WRLD/Clever/Post Malone

So apparently this was the original mix of the Juice WRLD song that featured Halsey that popped up in his 2020 album Legends Never Die. I liked this song a lot when it was just the original and this version goes for a bit more of an acoustic sound and I think it works extremely well with Juice WRLD's voice and it really shows off how good his voice was. Both Clever and Post Malone have decent verses here, but Halsey's verse being gone is still a loss. She/they really worked well with the song and it kind of sucks to not have her/them on this version, but I still really enjoy this version.

#100: Lil Bit - Nelly/Florida Georgia Line

This song should be at least decent, but it really wasn't executed well. The song that these guys did together from a while back, Cruise, was great, but this really isn't. The verses are decent, but then they go to the chorus and it just feels like it should evolve more than it does. It really doesn't though and then I come to the fact that the FGL guys don't sound that great and it really brings the song down.

Best Debut: Life's A Mess II - Juice WRLD/Clever/Post Malone

Worst Debut: Hellcats & Trackhawks - Only The Family/Lil Durk

Losses
#24: For The Night - Pop Smoke/Lil Baby/DaBaby (-10) [#6] {36 weeks}
#25: Beat Box 2 / 3 - SpottemGottem/Pooh Shiesty / DaBaby (-10) [#15] {8 weeks}
#29: Whoopty - CJ (-11) [#10] {18 weeks}
#33: GOOD TIME - Niko Moon (-13) [#20] {23 weeks}
#42: willow - Taylor Swift (-10) [1 week at #1] {13 weeks}
#44: WITHOUT YOU - The Kid LAROI (-10) [#34] {14 weeks}
#46: Throat Baby (Go Baby) - BRS Kash (-18) [#24] {21 weeks}
#48: Down To One - Luke Bryan (-12) [#36] {11 weeks}
#49: Holy - Justin Bieber/Chance the Rapper (-20) [#3] {25 weeks}
#69: Beers And Sunshine - Darius Rucker (-16) [#42] {13 weeks}
#81: Lifestyle - Jason Derulo/Adam Levine (-10) [#71] {5 weeks}
#87: Neighbors - Pooh Shiesty/BIG30 (-11) [#51] {5 weeks}
#91: Finesse Out The Gang Way - Lil Durk/Lil Baby (-12) [#39] {6 weeks}
#94: Tyler Herro - Jack Harlow (-16) [#34] {20 weeks}
#99: AP - Pop Smoke (-35) [#64] {2 weeks}

Wow, this is a big list. Alright, let's do this: For The Night is good but old, Beat Box never should've jumped, Whoopty deserved to be a bigger hit, GOOD TIME faded on me, so I don't care, willow was always good, but I'm satisfied with the amount of success it got, WITHOUT YOU is great and I'm sad that it's fading, Throat Baby isn't memorable whatsoever, same with Down To One, Holy is great but old, Beers And Sunshine was never good, Lifestyle was good but was never destined to become a hit, Neighbors is forgettale, FOTGW is good, so it sucks that it's leaving, Tyler Herro's kind of old and would've been gone next week anyways because of recurrents and AP isn't the best Pop Smoke song, so I'm not disappointed that it had no longevity here.

Gains
#30: What's Your Country Song - Thomas Rhett (+14) [#30] {12 weeks} *new peak*
#37: Astronaut In The Ocean - Masked Wolf (+12) [#37] {4 weeks} *new peak*
#82: Breaking Up Was Easy In The 90's - Sam Hunt (+10) [#82] {2 weeks} *new peak*
#85: Pick Up Your Feelings - Jazmine Sullivan (+10) [#85] {7 weeks} *new peak*

I'm quite glad that Astronaut In The Ocean and Pick Up Your Feelings are doing well and I really don't care about the other two.

Dropouts
I Hope - Gabby Barrett/Charlie Puth (#24) [#3] {62 weeks}
Bang! - AJR (#35) [#8] {35 weeks}
Lemonade - Internet Money/Gunna/Don Toliver/NAV (#38) [#6] {29 weeks}
Lonely - Justin Bieber/benny blanco (#41) [#12] {20 weeks}
Laugh Now Cry Later - Drake/Lil Durk (#47) [#2] {29 weeks}
Only Wanna Be With You (Pokémon 25 Version) - Post Malone (#74) [#74] {1 week}
hole in the bottle - Kelsea Ballerini (#89) [#39] {20 weeks}
Drunk (And I Don't Wanna Go Home) - Elle King/Miranda Lambert (#90) [#90] {1 week}
Like I Want You - Giveon (#98) [#95] {3 weeks}
BICHOTA - KAROL G (#100) [#72] {13 weeks}

I Hope, Bang!, Lemonade and Laugh Now Cry Later were all good, but they had good runs here, so I'm satisfied. Lonely probably shouldn't have been a hit. It sucks that the two best debuts from last week only lasted a week and it also sucks that hole in the bottle had to flop right as I was getting into it. Like I Want You wasn't good, so I'm not disappointed and BICHOTA was never gonna last after its re-entry last week.

    2. Yeah, Golden is currently sitting at #1 on my Ultimate Rank for 2021, so that isn't good... it passed Levitating this week.

    1. AllAccess is being a little whack and it was saying that Beginning Middle End, Too Late and Bad Girl were all getting spins, but they really haven't... so not so sure what to do about that.

    1. I mean, if there are gonna be more singles from that album, that’s definitely one of the better ones she could’ve gone with (even though unpopular opinion: I still don’t love it as much as I want to and everyone else seems to)
