Week of June 26, 2021 - Olivia Rodrigo (4)

Just one announcement this week: the Weekend Countdown Olympics will be shortened to only 5 events, as I'll be away for the majority of July and I really just don't have the motivation to do 10. Anyways, this week's Countdown was pretty good. I have a lot of new songs to talk about, and I'd say that that makes up for the lack of movement on the actual chart. Countdown Extra: Fine Apple - Nic D

So, along with our three debuts this week, two songs return to the the Countdown: la di die at #29 and Lil Bit at #22. I'm decently happy to see la di die back, and I hope it can stick around for a bit longer this time, and I'm very disappointed that Lil Bit found its way back.

Surprisingly, just one week after returning to Hit-Bound, RAPSTAR by Polo G debuts at #30. I'm honestly quite glad that this is here and I'm unsure why it left Hit-Bound in the first place. Polo G has some pretty great flow here and I really like how his voice sounds throughout the song. The hook's pretty catchy, and while the guitar line gets repetitive pretty quickly, the rest of the production is pretty solid. This is a good rap song, and I'm glad it managed to cross over. I hope it sticks around for a bit.

For whatever reason, Tones And I's new song, Cloudy Day debuted after just one week in Hit-Bound at #27. It now makes it her third Countdown song, and I would place it second. Better than Fly Away, but nowhere near as good as Dance Monkey. Honestly, my main issue with this song is that it's not memorable whatsoever. The verses aren't ridiculously interesting, and while the chorus is kind of catchy, it's really not enough for the song to stick out among the hits right now.

I was originally going to review this last debut a couple weeks ago for the New Music Friday post, but that post never ended up coming out, so I'm reviewing it for the first time today. It's working by Tate McRae and Khalid. This is definitely Tate McRae's best song where she's the lead artist so far. Her and Khalid's voices mix quite well together and while the verses aren't very memorable at all, the chorus is quite good. The production is pretty good and the song stays upbeat enough for me to be interesting in it throughout the entire thing. Overall, this is a solid little song that I'd be fine with becoming a hit.

Best Debut: RAPSTAR - Polo G

Biggest Drop: Heat Waves - Glass Animals (-7): Okay, good. I'm starting to get a little tired of this song, so I'm happy that it's starting to drop.

Biggest Jump: Leave Before You Love - Marshmello/Jonas Brothers (+9): What? Why is this at #8? I don't mind the song, but it's definitely not that big of a hit and it doesn't need to be that high.

We got seven Hit-Bound debuts this week, with the first being Roddy Ricch's third song to grace the ears of Hits 1 listeners. His newest, Late At Night debuts on Hit-Bound this week. While I don't think this is as good as The Box or ROCKSTAR, it's definitely grown on me since I first reviewed it. I've always loved Roddy's voice, and that doesn't change in the slightest here. He sounds great, especially in the verses, and the beat compliments his voice well. The hook isn't his strongest, but I still like it. I hope this can manage to become a hit for him.

Up next is Willow Smith, who now just goes by WILLOW. She returns with Travis Barker on her new song, t r a n s p a r e n t s o u l (that's really hard to type out, and I'm sure it'll get annoying really quickly). Anyways, this is a pop-punk song, and while I've always liked pop-rock-sounding songs, this isn't doing it for me. I don't like WILLOW's voice, especially in the chorus, and the chorus as a whole is very annoying. The instrumentation and the verses aren't bad, but they're not nearly enough to save this song. I hope this doesn't become a hit.

Very surprisingly, Hits 1 actually listened to me and picked up my recommendation from the past couple of weeks, All My Favorite Songs by Weezer and AJR! Recently, I took a dive into AJR's discography, so I got a lot more familiar with this remix, and it grew on me a lot. Weezer and AJR have previously collaborated on Sober Up, which was one of my favourite songs from 2018 by the way, and I'm very glad that they collaborated again, because Rivers Cuomo and Jack Met's voices work really well together. I really enjoy the chorus with the AJR-ified production, and both verses are fantastic. I doubt this'll be a hit, but with AJR's recent rise in popularity, who knows? It could be.

NF gets his fourth song on Hits 1 this week with his newest single, JUST LIKE YOU. I've liked all of NF's singles so far, and this is no exception. Personally, I think that this is his weakest hook of the singles so far, but I really liked the verses mixed with the darker production. It's clear that this song wasn't predominantly geared to be a pop radio hit, but I'm honestly really happy that it is. He starts rapping quite fast in the second verse and it sounds really good, even if I haven't managed to decipher the lyrics yet. This song's also over four minutes long, which I really appreciate. I'm not too fond of the trend of every song being 2:30.

Apparently this next song is another TikTok song, Fine Apple by Nic D. I don't really like this song. It suffers from a lot of the same problems as A-O-K does. I don't like Nic D's voice and while the chorus is fun, it's slightly annoying. The production here also gets pretty repetitive and annoying. I'd rather not have this become a hit.

Doja Cat and The Weeknd's collaboration from Doja's new album, Planet Her, You Right, also debuts this week. This song's... fine. It's definitely better than Need To Know, which is good, but it's also kind of slow, and while both Doja and Abel sound great here, I'm just not interested in the song whatsoever. Again, the production's fine and all, and the chorus is decently catchy, but this song is just pretty boring.

Lorde scores her first song on Hits 1 since 2017's Green Light with her brand new single, Solar Power. I've already talked about this song, and my opinion really hasn't changed that much. I still find the first two minutes of the song pretty boring, but Lorde sounds good, and the melody's still interesting. Once the song picks up though, it gets a lot better, and kind of like it. But, the first chunk still exists, and it makes the song feel a lot longer than it actually is. Overall, this balances out to be a decent song, but I don't really see it becoming a hit.

For whatever reason, they switched back to the originals of both Girl From Rio and Track Star. Both versions are worse, so I'm not too thrilled about that.

We lost three Hit-Bound songs this week, Need To Know, u love u and THINK ABOUT ME. I didn't expect Need To Know to debut, and You Right is slightly better anyways, so I don't care that it's gone, and both u love u and THINK ABOUT ME left way too soon.

Find the Sun on a Blurb-y Day

We lost five Countdown songs this week, Your Power, By Your Side, Mr. Perfectly Fine, We're Good and forget me too. Your Power was really bad and I'm very glad that the general public realized that it wasn't a radio song. By Your Side was very forgettable, so I don't care whatsoever that it only lasted two weeks before leaving permanently. As for the other three, they were all good, and I'm satisfied with the amount of success that they got here.

Ugh, Peaches needs to go away. I get that it's still a big hit everywhere else, and it would make sense for it to stick around for a while, but when has Hits 1 ever made sense?

So, 90s Kids isn't the One to Watch anymore, but it's still here and gaining, which is always a good sign.

Um... why is You becoming a hit? I guess I'm not exactly complaining, because I don't dislike the song, but I think I'd still rather have it not become a hit.

Shy Away left the top 15, which makes me really sad. It deserved to be a bigger hit than Level of Concern.

Butter made a big eight-spot gain into the upper half of the Countdown this week, which is good. I'd like to see this become a hit here.

Hunh. Our Song is underperforming here for 1D standards. But, it's happened before that a song by 1D has had a slow start before hitting #1 for multiple weeks... *cough*our #1 from last year*cough*.

Beautiful Mistakes also made a big eight-spot gain to return to #11. Yeah, I guess I'm okay with this. I'd be fine if it stuck around for a bit.

When is Follow You gonna move past #9? I thought Hits 1 liked Imagine Dragons. *sighs*

Looks like MONTERO lost its shot at #1, as it drops to #4 this week. I'm kind of sad that it didn't end up hitting #1, because it would've been nice to have a black rapper at the top spot again (Flo Rida, Wiz Khalifa and Juice WRLD are the only ones to have been the lead artist, Future and DaBaby have had features at the top spot) but it's fine.

Oh! Hunh. I guess it was a good week for AJR. Way Less Sad jumped up to #3 this week! It now ties Bang!'s peak. I really hope that it can manage to hit #1 after good 4 u is done.

Kiss Me More is up to #2 this week. This song's starting to get kind of annoying, so I'd prefer if it didn't hit #1, but it'd be okay if it did.

Week of June 19, 2021 - Olivia Rodrigo (3)

Hey guys! I apologize that this post is so late, but I was away for the weekend and when I came back I didn't feel up to writing this. But, it's here now. I only have one announcement, and that's that event 1 of the Weekend Countdown Olympics has been up for about a week now. It would be best if everybody that wanted to participate did so by Friday, because I'm pretty sure that's when it'll be done. Thanks! Here's our lone exit for this week.

Countdown Extra: I DID IT - DJ Khaled/Post Malone/DaBaby/Megan Thee Stallion/Lil Baby

Our only debut this week sees the Countdown debut of Tesher. He collaborated with Jason Derulo on this new song, Jalebi Baby (still not sure what that means). This song's decent. I really enjoy the production here, and I think both Tesher and Jason Derulo do a good job with the vocals here. My only issue with it is that it's not very memorable at all. I doubt it'll end up sticking around for too long.

Biggest Drop: Your Power - Billie Eilish (-13): I'm really happy that this song has decided to flop here. It's now down to #29, and I really hope that this is our last week having to deal with it.

Biggest Jump: Leave Before You Love Me - Marshmello/Jonas Brothers (+12): Ok, whatever. This song really isn't memorable, so I really don't care how it does here.

Our first Hit-Bound debut of the week is a song that I've been really enjoying for the past little bit. It's Friday by Riton, Nightcrawlers, Mufasa & Hypeman and Dopamine. This song is honestly just super fun. Whoever's singing here sounds really good and like they're having a lot of fun. The production is awesome and super upbeat, and the chorus is ridiculously catchy. I really love this song and I hope it can debut here.

Next up is a new Doja Cat song, Need To Know. This song is very different from the past singles she's had here, as it's much more of a slower R&B song than Say So, Like That or Kiss Me More. Yeah, I don't love this one. I've never been a huge fan of Doja Cat, and while I think she sounds pretty good here, the song is just really boring. Nothing about it really grabs my attention, and it makes it really hard for me to care about the song in the slightest. I doubt this'll be a big hit at all, but I could be proven wrong. Who knows?

Tones And I brings her fifth song to Hit-Bound this week, Cloudy Day. I find this to be a much more interesting version of Fly Away. It doesn't start that way, as it starts pretty slow, but by the chorus, it picks up enough for it to become interesting. Tones And I sounds pretty good here, especially in the verses. Honestly, that's probably what saves the verses, because otherwise, they're just a little bland. Overall, this is an enjoyable listen, even if it's not a fantastic song.

This week, jxdn scores his third song on Hits 1, as THINK ABOUT ME debuts Hit-Bound this week. This easily his best song so far. It's leagues better than Angels & Demons and even his other song on Hit-Bound right now, la di die with Nessa Barrett. I think jxdn sounds the best that he's ever sounded in this song. The chorus is pretty catchy and I really like the instrumentation in it. It's also 3:24, which is much better than his previous 2-minute long songs.

Two previous Hit-Bound dropouts return to Hit-Bound this week, RAPSTAR and Track Star. I'm glad that RAPSTAR is back, and Track Star actually returns with a new Chris Brown remix. Overall, I think it's a bit better than the original, because it adds a good Mooski verse at the start, and a really good Chris Brown verse after the first chorus. Funnily enough, Hits 1's actually edited out A Boogie Wit da Hoodie and Yung Bleu on this remix. Overall, it's fine because Yung Bleu's verse isn't that great and Boogie's verse is quite good, so it balances out.

We actually lost five Hit-Bound songs this week, Little Bit of Love, F***BOY, First Time, Frankenstein and SUN GOES DOWN. Little Bit of Love was great, but as soon as By Your Side came out, it was destined to drop out, so it's fine. F***BOY was awful, so I'm glad it never really got a chance. First Time had a decent run, as it did actually debut on the Countdown. Frankenstein was ridiculously forgettable, so I don't really care and SUN GOES DOWN deserved more.

Best Hit-Bound Debut: Friday (Re-Edit) - Riton/Nightcrawlers/Mufasa & Hypeman/Dopamine

Ja-Blurbi Baby

Our one and only exit this week was Till Forever Falls Apart. This song was never that good, and I had started to lose interest in it anyways, so I'm kind of happy that it's gone.

Peaches is in the bottom 5! Hopefully, it leaves next week.

Mr. Perfectly Fine took a huge tumble this week to #25, which I'm okay with, because it had a good run here.

Ok then, I guess A-O-K is actually becoming a hit. I don't really like the song, so I'm not too thrilled about that.

90s Kids had a huge jump this week, which bodes well for when it isn't the One to Watch anymore.

Astronaut In The Ocean's run in the top 10 was very short-lived, as it got replaced by WITHOUT YOU this week. I'd be fine if the latter song started dropping. It's been here for just a little too long.

Week of June 12, 2021 - Olivia Rodrigo (2)

Hey, everyone! I know that this is a bit later than expected, but it's here now, so that'll just have to do. Just letting you guys know in advance that I'll be away again this weekend. Now, obviously, I've had to turn Comment Moderation back on, because it just simply didn't work with it off. Again, this may be only temporary, but this is proving to be a consistent problem, so it's likely that it won't be. Now, onto this week's countdown. It was alright. There were a couple of stupid things that happened, but overall, it was still a solid week, as our #1 is still fantastic and we have a few songs finally getting justice here. Here are our exits for this week.

Countdown Extra: Jalebi Baby - Tesher/Jason Derulo

Our first debut this week skips Hit-Bound and debuts directly onto the Countdown at #30. It's By Your Side by Calvin Harris and Tom Grennan, who makes his Weekend Countdown debut this week. I find this song pretty enjoyable. While it's definitely not as good as Tom Grennan's other song on Hits 1 right now, Little Bit of Love, and I find his voice a little worse here than in that song, it's definitely not unwelcome here. I really appreciate how Calvin Harris is going back to his older sound after making some not-so-great songs like Over Now with The Weeknd. The drop is pretty interesting to listen to, even if it gets a little repetitive. My only problem with this song is that it's pretty forgettable. I really can't see this sticking around for very long at all. Actually, I'd be surprised if it's still here next week.

So for whatever reason, our highest debut is A-O-K by Tai Verdes at #28. I talked about this song a couple of weeks ago when it debuted Hit-Bound, and I believe I said that I doubted that it would debut, but alas, here we are. This isn't for the better. I find this song quite annoying. I don't love Tai Verdes' voice, the verses are forgettable and the chorus is just a little obnoxious. The only redeeming factors of this song are that the writing's good and it at least sounds like Tai's having fun... holy crap. This is how everybody else feels about AJR.

Best Debut: By Your Side - Calvin Harris/Tom Grennan

Biggest Drop: Beautiful Mistakes - Maroon 5/Megan Thee Stallion & forget me too - Machine Gun Kelly/Halsey (-9): I like both of these songs, but Beautiful Mistakes is starting to get a little overplayed, and forget me too actually isn't even a single, so I'm fine to see both of these go and I'm satisfied with how well they did here.

Biggest Jump: Heat Waves - Glass Animals (+9): So for whatever reason, this song's all the way up at #6. I thought that this song was interesting when it first came out, and now it's gotten kind of stale, so I'm not sure why it's just now gaining a lot of traction here.

*Skipped Hit-Bound, so this is technically its first time around

Our one and only Hit-Bound debut this week is a song that I've really been enjoying for these past couple of weeks. It's a new one from blackbear, a collaboration with Tate McRae, u love u. I never doubted for a second that this would get a shot here and I'm definitely not disappointed. I really enjoy blackbear's music and I think his sound is really cool. Tate McRae also sounds decent here and her voice works surprisingly well with the production. Speaking of the production, it's great. It's simple, but it's perfect for the song. Top it all off with a catchy chorus, and you have a great song that will no doubt do well here.

After spending only one week on the Countdown at #30, (sound familiar?) la di die re-enters Hit-Bound this week. I didn't really expect this to last very long on the Countdown, but I was hoping that it would at least spend a couple of weeks in the bottom 5 before coming back here. Oh, well. Hopefully, it can re-enter.

This is probably our first week in a while where we haven't had any Hit-Bound dropouts, as the only song leaving Hit-Bound this week is Once In A Lifetime, which dropped off of the Countdown last week. The song was forgettable, so I don't really care.

Livin' In a Big Blue Blurb

Our only other Weekend Countdown exit this week was Remember That Night?, which, while it was admittedly pretty forgettable, it was still enjoyable, so it will be missed.

I really expected Leave Before You Love Me to do well here and I'm really surprised to see it drop to #29, especially since it's gaining traction elsewhere.

For whatever reason, telepatía is not only still here, but it actually jumped this week. I'd really rather not have this stay.

I'm really surprised that Wave of You is still here, but I'm even more surprised that it jumped up six spots to #19 this week. I'm certainly not complaining, but... hunh?

Despite it being in the top 5 on airplay for nearly the whole week, Best Friend dropped four spots and looks like it may not do too well here. Can't say I'm disappointed, but can't say I'm happy either.

Okay, why is Your Power up at #16!? T h i s i s n o t a r a d i o s o n g.

Both We're Good and Mr. Perfectly Fine took big hits this week, which I'm okay with. Both are good songs and I'm glad that both got a couple weeks at #1.

Shy Away finally jumped up to #12 this week. This is long overdue, because this is a great song.

For whatever reason, Our Song really grew on me. It also jumped all the way up to #11. I would say that I'm surprised, but... it's Hits 1, what do you expect?

Yeeeessssssss Astronaut In The Ocean is getting what it deserves! It jumped up to #9 this week and I'm really happy.

Looks like Way Less Sad won't become a big hit here for AJR, which makes me sad, because I still really like the song.

Ugh, can we leave Leave The Door Open? It's about to dip into mediocre really soon.

Completely unsurprisingly, good 4 u holds on for another week at #1. I hope that this stays for a while at the top spot, because at least for now, it's the best song that's anywhere close to the top spot.
