Week of October 30, 2021 - Ed Sheeran (2)

Hey, all! So, the biggest story of this week is that Ed Sheeran dropped his newest album, =, yesterday. So, naturally, he's still the #1 this week. I'd say this week was decent overall, although the Hit-Bound entrants weren't great. Let's jump into it!

Countdown Extra: Dynamite - Sean Paul/Sia

After dropping out of Hit-Bound a couple of weeks ago, Angel Baby by Troye Sivan makes its debut at #29 this week. I'm gonna be honest: I never expected this to debut. But, it's definitely grown on me since I first reviewed it, so I'm not disappointed that it's here. Troye Sivan sounds pretty great throughout the song, especially in the chorus. I love the way the production swells in the chorus, even though I'm still not a huge fan of when Troye dives into his "angel, baby, angel" section. The vocal effect on his voice in the bridge is a little strange, but it fits the song really well. Also, weird side note, I can't hear the first couple of lines without thinking that this is a Dan + Shay song. Not sure if anyone else notices that, or if it's just me, but whatever. I'm glad this is here.

Finally, coming in at #27, we have our new One to Watch Mae Muller, teaming up with producer NEIKED and Polo G on the three artists' new song, Better Days. Looks like we have some competition for my favourite One to Watch song of all time, because this song's great. The song's super upbeat and fun, something that Mae Muller's voice fits really well with. Then, Polo G comes in with his verse. *chef's kiss* Can we just take a moment to appreciate Polo G? Seriously, he elevates every single song he's on. I'm glad that this song will be here for the next month at least.

Best Debut: Better Days - NEIKED/Mae Muller/Polo G

Biggest Drop: Love Again - Dua Lipa (-12): I'm honestly pretty sad that this song flopped. It deserved much better, and I'm sad that it's on its way out now. I mean, come on. This deserved to do better than We're Good.

Biggest Jump: THATS WHAT I WANT - Lil Nas X (+6): Yay! I'm glad that this song rebounded from its drop last week. I hope that that means that this will do well here.

We got a new Khalid single this week, called Present (the verb, not the noun). This song's alright. Khalid sounds decent, but not really like himself in the chorus. The production's pretty good, and compliments his voice pretty well. The chorus isn't particularly catchy, but that's okay. Yeah, I don't have anything else to say about this song.

As I mentioned earlier, Ed Sheeran's new album, =, was released yesterday, and our next Hit-Bound debut is the song that's being pushed now with the album, Overpass Graffiti. I guess this is Ed Sheeran's attempt at an 80s song. Well, attempt is definitely the right word for it. Ed's voice doesn't fit with the whole vibe of the song that well, although he doesn't sound bad here. The production here's a little bland, but has a fun beat. The chorus is super catchy, though, so overall, this is decent. I don't think it's the right vibe for Ed Sheeran, though.

Next up, we have Oliver Tree making his Hits 1 debut. *sighs* I was hoping that this guy would never make it onto pop radio. Freaking TikTok. At least this was the song that did it. I don't find his new single, Life Goes On, nearly as annoying as some of his other songs that I've heard, but it's still far from good. For starters, I really don't like his voice. On top of that, the whole vibe of the song is really strange, and it doesn't sit well with me for whatever reason. The melodies in this song are decent, though, so that stops this from being awful.

Great... Regard, my favouriiiiite producer is back this week, with Signals featuring Kwabs. I have no clue who this Kwabs dude is, and I'm 99% sure Regard just pitched his voice down a bunch, but he doesn't sound good here. In addition, all we get for the production is Regard's typical repetitive drops, which I don't like at all. I'd rather not have Regard continue to get hits.

Monsta X's One Day entered the Abyss this week, just after it started to get spins. 'Cause, you know. Logic.

As for the rest of our dropouts, we have The Real Thing, Bad Day and Giving In To The Love. I never expected any of these to debut, so I'm not disappointed in the slightest about any of them leaving.

Oh, yeah, also, love nwantiti pulled a Sunday Best for the third week in a row. This didn't need to happen.

Best Hit-Bound Debut: Overpass Graffiti - Ed Sheeran

Oh, My Angel Angel, Blurb-y, Angel You're My Angel, Blurb-y Blurb-y, You're My Angel Angel, Blurb-y

We lost two songs this week, good 4 u and Sheesh!. good 4 u had an amazing run here, and will definitely be #1 of the year. As for Sheesh!, it was never great, so I'm not disappointed that it didn't do too well here.

edamame dropped to #30 off of its debut last week, which kinda sucks.

Cheat Codes' Hurricane also somehow got a big jump from last week.

Ghost is back in the top 15, which is awesome.

Both Who's In Your Head and A-O-K are in the top 10. I'm happy about the former, disappointed about the latter.

Looks like STAY's not gonna be sticking around for ridiculously long, as it's already left the top 5.

Predictably, Easy On Me is already up at #4. I have no doubts that it will only be one-two weeks before this hits #1.

Countdown Extra: The Real Thing - Dixie

So we have three debuts on this week's countdown, the first two of which dropped out of Hit-Bound last week. We'll kick it all off with Hurricane by Cheat Codes, Grey and Tyson Ritter of the All-American Rejects. This song's pretty good. The chorus is pretty catchy, the production's not the best, but it's fine, and Tyson Ritter sounds pretty good here (and kinda like Louis Tomlinson). Overall, it's a good song, but it's pretty forgettable, and I'm not sure how it debuted. I don't expect it to last very long at all here.

Next up, coming in at #24, we have edamame by bbno$ and Rich Brian. This song's quite good. Overall, I'd describe this song as stupidly great. The production is kinda strange, but super fun. Both bbno$ and Rich Brian sound great here, and have really good flows in the verses. The chorus is ridiculously catchy, and I find it stuck in my head a lot. My only real issue with this is that the lyrics are... questionable at best. Anyways, I hope this does well here.

Finally, we have Adele's newest single, Easy On Me debuting all the way up at #7 this week. That's right, folks. That's an all-time record, tying Sucker's #7 debut. And, I don't even think that the top-30/top-45 thing made much of a difference at all, as this song definitely didn't have enough momentum to debut last week, even with a top-45 countdown. Anyways, this song's pretty great, but it's not really anything special. I mean, if you told me it was released five years ago, I would definitely agree with you. But, that being said, it's still an Adele song, and it's still great. Adele sounds amazing here, the piano line is well-constructed and the last chorus is easily the best part of the song. I have no doubts that this will hit #1 in a couple of weeks, which I'm totally fine with, but I hope INDUSTRY BABY can hit #1 before it gets there.

Best Debut: Easy On Me - Adele

Biggest Drop: love nwantiti (ah ah ah) - CKay & Meet Me At Our Spot - THE ANXIETY (-7): Yeah, so for some reason, both of these songs pulled Sunday Bests again this week, and both fell a lot from their debuts last week. I only have one question: why?

Biggest Jump: Memory - Kane Brown/blackbear (+10): Well... that was certainly... unexpected. I'm not really complaining, as this is a pretty good song, but I just didn't really expect it to do anything after re-entering last week.

Our first Hit-Bound debut this week comes from ex-Little Mix member Jesy Nelson, teaming up with Nicki Minaj on her new song, Boyz. Now, I would find this song pretty good. Both Jesy and Nicki sound quite good here, and the chorus is pretty catchy, but the production here is extremely messy. The guitar in the chorus just sounds super out-of-place, and its rhythm feels off for whatever reason. And that's pretty much the only production that this song has, as nothing else is prominent enough to focus on instead of it. Will this song grow on me? I guess we'll see.

Well, it's been a very long time since we've heard anything from Swedish House Mafia, but this week they team up with none other than The Weeknd on a brand-new song, Moth To A Flame. From the moment I first heard this song, I knew that I loved it. Abel sounds great in this song, and his voice fits the darker production in the verses super well. Then, the chorus hits, and melodically, it's amazing. On top of that, the beat has just enough substance to keep me interested in the song, while still keeping the feel of the song dark. Overall, this is a great song, and a much better attempt at an EDM-The Weeknd song than Over Now.

*fake enthusiasm* Oh, great. New Sean Paul. This week, he teams up with Sia, on a new song called Dynamite. The only thing that I really like about this song is the super-fun production. Other than that, it's not that good. I've never really liked Sean Paul's voice, and I find Sia's voice decent. But, this song is essentially a Sean Paul song with a super-repetitive Sia hook. Overall, it's a little too fun for me to dislike, but it's not good either. Which I guess makes it decent? Either way, BTS' song of the same name is much better.

NOOOOOOOO WHY!? NOBODY WANTED MORE WALKER HAYES! *sighs* After the success of Fancy Like, Walker Hayes decided he would go a little more pop on his new song, U Gurl. I despise this song. Honestly, it's worse than Fancy Like. At least that song was melodic. In this song, Walker Hayes decided to do the thing that some country artists decide to do in the verses, where they're pretty much just talking. I hate that style of "singing" with a passion. On top of that, it's got this obnoxious, pop-country bassline in the hook. Mix all that up with Walker Hayes' voice and some typical, awful, country music writing and you have an atrocious attempt at a song. But, y'know. Some people like this, and that's totally fine.

Well, we'll finish off our Hit-Bound debuts on a much better note, as 88rising and BIBI have released a new song called The Weekend. This is a pretty good song. BIBI sounds great here, the production's kinda funky, and the song as a whole is catchy. I'd love to see this become a hit.

As for dropouts, we lost Chasing Stars (again), Last One Standing and Love Back. For the former, I'm not sure what the point of bringing it back last week was if they were just gonna ditch it again, but whatever. For the latter two, they were both amazing songs, and definitely should've been huge here.

Best Hit-Bound Debut: Moth To A Flame - Swedish House Mafia/The Weeknd

Well... Hit-Bound's being a little weird at the moment. Let me explain: Only one song currently on Hit-Bound is getting spins outside of any weekend shows, and that's Moth To A Flame (if we're not counting love nwantiti and Meet Me At Our Spot). Lately, songs have been leaving Hit-Bound, then starting to get spins, and then debuting the Countdown later, which makes Hit-Bound almost work like SiriusXM The Pulse's new music show, where songs only get spins after they've left it. Now, let me introduce to you something called the "Hits 1 Abyss". It's a state that a song is granted when they're being played on the station, but aren't played on either Hit-Bound or the Weekend Countdown. It's where many Hit-Bound songs have been going recently, and it's also where some old Countdown songs find themselves. Above, I have a list of every song in said "abyss", which includes Hit-Bound songs receiving spins (or songs that haven't made an appearance on Hit-Bound yet. More on that later) as well as old Countdown songs receiving spins that were included on my most recent Hit-Maker survey, meaning that they aren't gone. I'm gonna start a review of the "abyss" now, so this week, I'll go and review all the songs in the "abyss" that I haven't talked about yet.

But before we get to that, though, I'd like to talk about every other song that finds itself in the "abyss". For old Hit-Bound songs, we have Angel Baby, HIT IT and I Feel Good. I'm relatively happy that Angel Baby and I Feel Good aren't completely gone, as they're both pretty good, but I'd be more than happy if HIT IT could fully leave sometime soon. As for old Countdown songs, we have some good ones, like Essence, Happier Than Ever and Kanye's Hurricane, and one really bad one in Love Tonight.

The first new song that I get to talk about this week is what's been announced as the next One to Watch, Better Days by NEIKED, Mae Muller and Polo G. This song's a bop. The production from NEIKED is great, and super upbeat and fun. Mae Muller sounds great in her verse and chorus, and Polo G's verse is, as per usual, nothing short of amazing. Everything about this song just comes together so well, and the three artists work really well together. I'm pretty sure that all three of them are being considered as the Ones to Watch, too, which is great.

Next up, we have a new one from Anitta and Saweetie called Faking Love. I don't have a great track record with liking Saweetie's music, so I wasn't too excited for this song when I saw it, but it's much better than I expected it to be. Anitta sounds great here, and Saweetie really shocked me with a spectacular verse. My only issue with this is that the production's a little hollow, especially in the hook. But, other than that, this is a good song, and I'd love to see it on either the Countdown or Hit-Bound eventually.

For our last new "abyss" song, we have Wildest Dreams (Taylor's Version) by Taylor Swift. I was debating on whether I wanted to include this or not, as it could technically be considered an old song, but then it started falling in airplay, so I thought "why not"? So yeah, even though Taylor's releasing RED (Taylor's Version) in November, she decided to re-record a song from 1989, as it was getting tons of streams on TikTok. Overall, this is a great song. The original's great, but the production's a little more orchestral here than in the original, which is great, and obviously, Taylor sounds better here. I doubt that this will debut the Countdown, as Love Story (Taylor's Version) didn't do too well, but, then again, it did debut, so you never know.

Go BLUUUUUUUUUUUUURBY on Me, Baby

We lost three Countdown songs this week, Leave Before You Love Me, Summer of Love and @ my worst. Leave Before You Love Me was pretty old, so I'm not sad at all that it's gone. Summer of Love was nothing short of underwhelming, so I also don't care that it's gone, and @ my worst was great, but admittedly pretty forgettable, so it's fine.

For Tonight, justified and My Universe all got big jumps after being in the bottom 5 last week, which is great for each song.

So, apparently, after only two weeks on the Countdown, Paralyzed isn't the One to Watch anymore. Not sure what that's all about.

Nooooooo. Why did THATS WHAT I WANT and Ghost both drop? That's not fair!

Who's In Your Head is in the top 15 now, which I definitely expected. I'd be fine if this was a hit, but it shouldn't be too big.

Aw, Saturday isn't in the top 5 anymore... big sad.

Well, we have a new #1, as STAY dropped to #4 this week. And it's... Shivers? Oh, come on. INDUSTRY BABY deserved the top spot so much more than Shivers. But, of course, you've gotta give the #1 to the white guy with the guitar. You can't have a black person be #1 unless they're dead or The Weeknd. Do better, Hits 1.

Countdown Extra: Love Back - Why Don't We

Giveon scores his second song on the Countdown this week, after Heartbreak Anniversary tried really hard and failed to do so, called For Tonight. I'm really glad that this is the song that ended up debuting, because it's great. I still find Giveon's voice a bit strange, but I've grown used to it now, so it doesn't really bother me. Actually, I find him quite a good singer now. The chorus in this song is quite catchy for a ballad, and the verses hold up pretty nicely too. The production evolves really well here too. Overall, this is a great song, and I'd love to see it become a hit.

Also returning after dropping out of Hit-Bound last week, we have My Universe by Coldplay and BTS debuting at #27. Coldplay dropped their album, Music Of The Spheres yesterday, and I'm not so sure I plan on listening to it, but I might. Anyways, this song's pretty great, which is really surprising for a collaboration from two bands with very different sounds. But, for whatever reason, they mesh really well together. Chris Martin and the guys from BTS sound great together (even though the rapping verse feels out of place) and the production does a good job of sticking to Coldplay's sound while also including a nice little baseline that fits BTS. I wouldn't complain if this was a hit here.

For whatever reason, Memory by Kane Brown and blackbear is back at #25. I'm not really complaining, but I doubt this will last long.

Somehow, this next song got 40+ spins in the past week. Not sure why or how, but that's okay. I'm talking about love nwantiti (ah ah ah) by CKay, which debuts at #23 this week. Now, I'm not necessarily complaining that this is here, but I'm not ridiculously excited either. Honestly, this song's just kinda there, with not much to bring to the table. I like the production, but CKay's autotuned voice doesn't sound great. I have a feeling that this song's run will be very similar to Iko Iko's from earlier this year, where it sticks around the middle of the Countdown for around 10 weeks, then leaves.

Debuting all the way up at #20, we have WILLOW and Tyler Cole, A.K.A. THE ANXIETY with Meet Me At Our Spot. This song's actually grown on me a bit since it debuted Hit-Bound a few weeks ago. I think both WILLOW and Tyler Cole sound pretty good here, and the song's super catchy. The nice, chill, production fits the song really nicely, and the "woo! woo!" is stupidly hilarious and I love it. I'd love to see this do well here.

Best Debut: For Tonight - Giveon

Biggest Drop: Leave Before You Love Me - Marshmello/Jonas Brothers (-11): Yeah, I definitely expected this. This will likely be this song's last week here, which I'm totally fine with, because it's faded on me.

Biggest Jump: THATS WHAT I WANT - Lil Nas X (+10): Yay! I expected it to jump this week, but I didn't expect it to jump all the way up to #14. Needless to say, I'm super happy, and I'd love to see this make it to the top 10 sometime soon after INDUSTRY BABY starts to drop.

Well, it finally happened. After five years, Adele is finally back with the first single from her upcoming album 30, which is called Easy On Me. I've never been a die-hard Adele fan, but I tend to enjoy anything she puts out, so I had decently high expectations for this song. And boy, did it deliver. It's classic Adele, just how we like it. Adele (as per usual) sounds incredible here, and the piano line fits the song really nicely. I have absolutely no doubts that this will debut next week with the highest debut of the year so far, somewhere in the top 10.

Dixie D'Amelio brings a new song to Hits 1 this week. This one's called The Real Thing, and it's pretty good. Dixie sounds great here, and the chorus is pretty catchy. The production's good, but the last chorus is so anticlimactic. I actually hate the last chorus because of that. It seems like it's building up to a drop, then delivers the exact same production that's been heard throughout the song with no additions. It's still a good song, though.

Next up, we have BLACKPINK member LISA with her new song MONEY... what did I just listen to? Um... I guess this song isn't awful, but it's honestly just really strange. It goes through a bunch of changes throughout the song, and I'm not sure if I particularly like any of them. LISA sounds good throughout the song, which is good, but the production's kinda weird. On top of that, the writing also isn't great. This song reminds me why I wasn't a huge fan of k-pop before BTS released Dynamite.

Chasing Stars re-entered Hit-Bound after leaving it a few weeks ago. I'm fine with this being back, although I doubt it'll debut the Countdown.

We got another Halsey song on Hit-Bound this week, as Hits 1 picked up on another non-single from their album, If I Can't Have Love, I Want Power today, with this one being called Darling. This song's honestly beautiful. Halsey sounds angelic throughout the song, the writing's an amazing ode to their son, Ender, and they just execute it fantastically. The acoustic guitar throughout the song sounds great, and I honestly don't wish that there were any more production, the acoustic sound fits the song perfectly. Overall, I'd love to see this become a hit, though it'll likely drop out next week.

Next up is more of a guilty pleasure for me, Bad Day by Justus Bennetts. This song's super short, and kinda stupid, but it's really fun, and I like it a lot. Justus doesn't sound great here (and kinda reminds me of Tai Verdes, honestly), but the production's good, and the chorus is super catchy. I'm not really sure what else to say about this, except that I like it probably more than I should.

Finally, we have AURORA with a new song called Giving In To The Love. And I just wanna ask, does anyone else find the phrasing of that title really strange, or is it just me? Anyways, this song's fine. I'm not a huge fan of AURORA's voice, and I never have been, but she sounds decent in the verses. The production's pretty cool, honestly, and the pre-chorus is great. But other than that, this song isn't really anything special. This is decent for now, but it could definitely drop to mediocre.

As for the Hit-Bound Dropouts... *sighs* we have seven. 24/5, Cheat CodesHurricane, Don't Be Shy, Reckless (again), Get Into It (Yuh), edamame and Angel Baby. I really liked 24/5, so I'm pretty sad that it's gone. Hurricane finds itself in the abyss, so it's definitely not gone. Don't Be Shy was never that good, so I don't care about it. Reckless was just taking up space, so I'm also fine with this leaving. Get Into It (Yuh) almost started to grow on me again, but not enough that I care that it's gone. edamame was stupidly great, so I'm honestly kinda sad that it's gone. As for Angel Baby, it was extremely forgettable, so I don't care that it's gone.

Oh yeah, also, both love nwantiti and Meet Me At Our Spot both pulled Sunday Bests this week, which explains why there are only 13 songs listed here.

Best Hit-Bound Debut: Darling - Halsey

You, You Are My Blurb-iverse

We lost five songs from the Countdown this week, I am not a woman, I'm a god, Arcade, Happier Than Ever, everything sucks and People Watching (again). I am not a woman was good, but honestly quite forgettable. Arcade was also good, and had a good run here, so I'm not really complaining. Happier Than Ever should've done much better here, and I'm really sad to see it go. everything sucks lasted for longer than I expected it to, so that's good, and I'm not sure why People Watching re-entered a couple weeks ago, so I don't care that it's gone again.

For whatever reason, justified dropped down to #29. Kinda sucks, because the song's pretty good.

I'm genuinely surprised that good 4 u is still here, considering how quickly Hits 1 has been letting songs go recently. I'm still not complaining, though, as I still quite like the song.

Paralyzed jumped a ton after its debut last week. I'm not sure why this happened, and I really hope that it doesn't stick around for long after it's done being the One to Watch. Also, quick side note: the One to Watch songs have recently been staying for a while. I remember back when the One to Watch thing was kinda new, the songs tended to leave immediately after their "One to Watch" status was removed.

Sheesh! should not have jumped as much as it did. I hope this is short-lived.

Bad Habits took a huge hit this week, dropping ten spots to #13, which I'm alright with, because the song's been around for a while. Also, for whatever reason, Spyder Harrison seemed very adamant about the fact that Love Again was #3 last week and Bad Habits was #4, which just isn't true.

Beggin' has slowly climbed its way back up to #11, which is awesome. I'd love to see it become a hit here.

Oh, thank goodness, Fancy Like fell to #9 this week. Hopefully this means that it'll drop some more.

Love Again fell out of the top 5 this week, which kinda sucks, because it's a great song, and should've been at least bigger than We're Good.

Shivers finds itself at #6 this week, which is awesome. I'd love for this to hit #1.

Saturday lost its #2 spot this week and fell to #4, which isn't great, but a #2 peak is still better than Twenty One Pilots have done in a while, so I can't complain.

Completely out of nowhere, INDUSTRY BABY jumped nine spots to #3 this week, which is awesome. This song's just kept growing on me, and I'd love for it to become both artist's first #1 here.

Cold Heart jumped all the way up to #2... this didn't need to happen. I really hope this doesn't replace STAY at the top spot next week.

Speaking of STAY, it's been plummeting in airplay, so this is likely its last week at #1. Six weeks is incredible (and the second-most this year), though, so I'm not complaining whatsoever.
