2021 - A Year in Review

Hi, everyone and welcome to the Year in Review post! This post is basically just a collection of a bunch of different stats in the year.

We'll kick it off with our Weekend Countdown #1s.

Weekend Countdown #1s
Shivers - Ed Sheeran [10 weeks at #1]
good 4 u - Olivia Rodrigo [9 weeks at #1]
STAY - The Kid LAROI/Justin Bieber [6 weeks at #1]

We're Good - Dua Lipa [2 weeks at #1]
deja vu - Olivia Rodrigo [1 week at #1]
Overdrive - Conan Gray [1 week at #1]

Yeah, so not much diversity here... in case you didn't notice, the only black artist to hit #1 this year was DaBaby... yeah... other than that, the #1s were pretty good. I enjoyed a lot of these (pretty much every one except for Golden).

Next up is the Hunger Games Countdown #1s.

Hunger Games Countdown #1s

34+35 - Ariana Grande [1 week at #1]

Yeah, so this list is always chaotic. The only real noteworthy thing here is that Lifestyle spent four weeks at #1, which is a lot for this chart.

Next, If the Countdown Made Sense.

If the Countdown Made Sense #1s

Ah, there we go. There's some diversity. Anyways, nice to see STAY and good 4 u at the top for as long as they were.

Next, Hot 100.

Hot 100 #1s
Butter - BTS [10 weeks at #1]
drivers license - Olivia Rodrigo [8 weeks at #1]

Permission to Dance - BTS [1 week at #1]
Up - Cardi B [1 week at #1]
Way 2 Sexy - Drake/Future/Young Thug [1 week at #1]
What's Next - Drake [1 week at #1]

Yeah, there were a stupid amount of #1 debuts. Also, there was tons of chart manipulation from the BTS army. You can tell, because Butter spent the most weeks at #1 this year, but only ranked at #11 on Billboard's Year-End chart.

Last year, I gave it to Good Thing by Zedd and Kehlani, and the year before that, I gave it to Takeaway by The Chainsmokers, ILLENIUM and Lennon Stella. This year, the award goes to...

I DID IT - DJ Khaled/Post Malone/DaBaby/Megan Thee Stallion/Lil Baby

This song was a star-studded banger, and it deserved more than any song to debut, and I'm sad it didn't.

Next up is the percentages of all of the genres on the Weekend Countdown this year.

Countdown Genres
27.49% = Upbeat Pop (-10%)
23.98% = Slow Pop (+1%)
19.88% = Melodic Rap/R&B (+3%)
11.4% = Pop Rock (+2%)
5.85% = EDM (-4%)
4.09% = Pop Punk (New)
2.34% = Country (-2%)
2.05% = K-Pop (+1%)
1.75% = Latino (-)
1.17% = Afropop (New)

Upbeat Pop is predictable, still the #1 genre, but it actually lost a whole 10% of all Countdown songs from last year. It's nice to see Melodic Rap/R&B (I combined them, 'cause the line was too blurry between a lot of the songs) with almost 20% of all Countdown songs this year. Big step in the right direction. I'd also like to point out how Pop Rock made a comeback this year, getting 11% of the Countdown songs this year, which is awesome. It's always been my favourite genre. Pop Punk also made a debut this year, which is more amusing than anything.

Next up is our giant list of artists that scored their Countdown Debut this year.

6LACK

Now, I'll give out a new award, the "Best New Artist" award. This award doesn't go out to my favourite new artist of the year, but instead to the artist that I think has the most potential going forward. So this year, that award goes to:

Olivia Rodrigo!

This was pretty much a no-brainer, as she had a huge year despite releasing her first single this year.

Honourable Mentions
Anitta
Giveon
Lil Baby
Masked Wolf
Nessa Barrett
Polo G
Saweetie
The Kid LAROI

Next up is the artist who scored the most songs on the Countdown this year.

Artist with the Most Songs on the Countdown in 2021
Justin Bieber: 9 songs (Anyone, Essence, Ghost, Holy, Lonely, Monster, Peaches, STAY, Wandered To LA)

Yeah, so it's still Justin Bieber, like it was last year, except this time around, he scored two more songs than he did last year, for a grand total of nine songs, which is a lot.

Next up is the "Biggest Whiff of the Year" award, which goes out to the biggest hit that Hits 1 didn't pick up on. Now, the highest song on Billboard's Year-End list that fit this criteria was a country song, so I moved to the next one, which was actually on pop radio for a bit, so naturally made more sense for this award.

Biggest Whiff of the Year
DÁKITI - Bad Bunny/Jhay Cortez

It kinda makes sense why Hits 1 didn't pick this up, as they don't tend to like international music too much, but I would've loved to see this become a hit on the station. It was a pretty good song.

Next up is an award that I introduced last year, the "Oops! I Forgot" award. This "award" goes out to the most forgettable song of the year, or, in other terms, the one that upon reminded of its existence, you'd say, "Oops! I forgot that that song existed". But first, some honourable mentions.

Angel Baby - Troye Sivan
Cloudy Day - Tones And I
deep end - Fousheé
Faking Love - Anitta/Saweetie
Fine Apple - Nic D
Fly Away - Tones And I
Goodbye - Shaylen
Hurricane - Cheat Codes/Grey/Tyson Ritter
Jalebi Baby - Tesher/Jason Derulo
Mr. Perfectly Fine (Taylor's Version) - Taylor Swift
NDA - Billie Eilish
Once In A Lifetime - All Time Low
Overpass Graffiti - Ed Sheeran
Run (Taylor's Version) - Taylor Swift/Ed Sheeran
Say So - Masked Wolf
Sheesh! - Surfaces/Tai Verdes
Skin - Sabrina Carpenter
Wild Side - Normani/Cardi B

And the award goes to...

By Your Side - Calvin Harris/Tom Grennan

Don't tell me that you remembered this song, because you're definitely lying. I know you are.

And now, I have one last award, a new one, for the catchiest chorus of the year. This award goes to, simply, the song that had the catchiest chorus of the year. But first, some honourable mentions.

Astronaut In The Ocean - Masked Wolf
drivers license - Olivia Rodrigo
good 4 u - Olivia Rodrigo
Heat Waves - Glass Animals
I'm not Pretty (Remix) - JESSIA/Bebe Rexha
INDUSTRY BABY - Lil Nas X/Jack Harlow
Levitating - Dua Lipa
Lil Bit - Nelly/Florida Georgia Line
Peaches - Justin Bieber/Daniel Caesar/Giveon
positions - Ariana Grande
Saturday - Twenty One Pilots
Save Your Tears (Remix) - The Weeknd/Ariana Grande
Shivers - Ed Sheeran
STAY - The Kid LAROI/Justin Bieber
Take My Breath - The Weeknd

And the winner is...

A-O-K - Tai Verdes

Even though I don't like the song, I have to admit that the hook was stupidly catchy. If you asked me to sing the chorus, it would take me no time to remember it.

Anyways, that was a lot of fun for me to do, and I hope you guys had fun reading it. Kwaheri, and see you all next time for My Bottom 10 Songs of 2021!

  17. Imma give an opinion on We Don't Talk About Bruno, so you don't have to. Carolina Gaitan sounds very well at the beginning of the verse, and the "We Don't Talk About Bruno, No, No, No, No" is just so satisfying to say, and Mauro Castillo sounds a bit odd, like when he says "Thunder!!" Yeah, That part I despise. I don't really like Adassa's voice in the song, she could've done better in the song, but the voice is actually not bad. But man, Rhenzy Feliz ROCKS his verse. Rhenzy's voice sounds incredible with the production of the song. The Townspeople's verse is like very odd. They say their lines very weirdly, that I despise. Afterwards is Diane Guerrero, who sounds well with the minimal production of her verse. Adassa and Diane sing next, this time Adassa sounds very well, and Diane didn't need to add the "Hey sis, I want not a sound out of you." Stephanie Beatritz is next, she is very dramatic in her verse of the song, sounding well with the production of the song. There are two unnecessary lines here. One is "Isabella your boyfriend is here" and the other being "Time for Dinner!" Now here is the super wacky part. Carolina, Mauro, Adassa and Rhenzy sing their voices at the same time. What is this production in this part of the song, it just sounds so odd, and nobody probably likes that part either. Overall, the song is great (Especially Rhenzy's part)

  18. Agreed about A-O-K having the catchiest chorus.

Extremely and stupidly happy to see that Heat Waves got that many weeks on the countdown.

  20. There is a lot of SUNDAY BESTING. Bite Me never left Hit-Bound since it debuted, then re-entered, espically abcdefu, I AM WOMAN, Male Fantasy, Wandered to LA, and GHOST TOWN. THAT NEEDS TO STOP RIGHT NOW OR ILL NEVER LISTEN TO HIT-BOUND AGAIN!

Just Kidding, I love Hit-Bound, but Sunday Bests need to stop now. Also, I like Hits 1.

  24. I'm also questioning how Dakiti never made it on to Hits 1 but Telepatia did. I have a list of reggaeton songs that should have made it on to Hits 1 (that are not Todo de Ti or Pepas) but didn't:

    Anuel/Ozuna - Antes
    Luis Fonsi/Rauw Alejandro - Vacio
    Myke Towers/Juhn - Bandido
