Week of April 25, 2020 - The Weeknd (1)

The Weeknd (1)

LET’S FRICKING GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Aside from what I’m obviously happy about, it was actually a pretty good countdown! We’re finally starting to get rid of some of the older songs, and we got a lot of voting poll debuts! Also, Jimmy Fallon hosted the countdown… for some reason. The audio quality wasn’t great, because I think he was recording through Zoom or something. Other than that, he was pretty funny, except that he kept going off on the weirdest tangents. I think once he said “Hot weiners! Because I feel like people don’t hear ‘hot weiners’ enough!” Yeah, I think that’s enough said.

Countdown Extra: Idiot Boyfriend - Jimmy Fallon & Don’t Stand So Close To Me (Remix) - Jimmy Fallon/The Roots/Sting

Our first of three debuts this week comes from The Weeknd, who had a lot happening for him this week on the countdown. In Your Eyes debuts, being the fourth single from his newest album After Hours, and the third one to be picked up by Hits 1. Although it does give off the same vibe of Blinding Lights, and although it may seem like just a lesser version of Blinding Lights, it’s different enough to set it apart. The saxophone adds a cool twist to the song, and it feels like it mixed 80s and 20s music pretty well. I’d love to see this do as well as Blinding Lights is doing right now. Well… after Blinding Lights’ run is over. *4 weeks in Hit-Bound, 5 weeks on Voting Poll

I feel like Hits 1 literally just held off on Six Feet Apart for a week just to let Oh My God in. Which I’m not too happy about. This song feels really lazy for the most part. I don’t… hate Alec Benjamin, but Hits 1 is being a little excessive on his stuff. This song feels like it started to build up to a drop… but then it never happened. I don’t know, I’d just rather not have this on the countdown. *8 weeks in Hit-Bound, 9 weeks on Voting Poll

When I first heard Break My Heart by Dua Lipa, I liked it a lot. Then it started to grow on me. Which was odd. At this point, I really really like this song a lot. It’s super groovy, Dua sounds really great, and I think this is better than Don’t Start Now. Not much else to say here.

Best Debut: Break My Heart - Dua Lipa

Biggest DROP!!!: hot girl bummer - blackbear (-12): Aw. I kind of wanted this to be a hit. I didn’t expect it to drop this hard after a top 5 peak.

Biggest Jump: Old Me - 5 Seconds of Summer (+11): This is just up here because of 5SOS. That being said, it’s not bad, but still.

If You’re Too Shy (Let Me Know) - The 1975 [1]

I don’t really know what to think right now… our first song is Check Your Phone by Cheap Cuts and Pete Wentz, the drummer from Fall Out Boy. So Pete actually does the vocals here, while Cheap Cuts are the DJs. Except… the vocals are just kind of talking, and then there’s a beat overtop of it. I’m not sure how this is even a song, but I don’t hate it. The production’s actually pretty well done, despite it just being super weird. I’m not sure if this is gonna debut… frankly, I won't hate it if it does.

I’m extremely conflicted on this next song. It’s the remix of Roses by SAINt JHN and Imanbek. The production on this is really good, but it suffers from the same problem that Ride It does. The vocals are weird. You can’t hear them very well. They’re not rushed like Ride It, but I still don’t know if I like it. It’s really catchy though. I don’t know, this might grow on me, and it might not.

Next up is a song that I never expected Hits 1 to pick up on. It’s Blueberry Faygo by Lil Mosey. But I’m really happy they did pick up on it, because I really like this song. It’s addictively catchy and Lil Mosey is extremely charismatic here. I’d love to see this do well here, though I don’t really expect it to.

Now, a Charlie Puth remix of a country song is not really what I expected, but I’ve gotta say, it works. He remixed Gabby Barrett’s I Hope, and I really really like it. It’s a song about being cheated on, and then trying to put it in perspective for the other person. It’s really catchy, and although I don’t normally like country music, I really like Charlie Puth here. So I hope this debuts, and this is one of my favourite songs right now.

Next up is Ava Max’s fourth song on Hits 1, Kings & Queens. I’ve gotta say, Ava Max is a really talented artist. By reading my older posts, you may not know that I feel that way, but the truth is, I’ve grown to like Sweet but Psycho and So Am I again. We just haven’t gotten there in the Ultimate Rank yet. Anyways, this song is really catchy, and Ava Max just does a really great job here. Great song.

The next two songs, I can’t remember really what they sound like, except I know I don’t like that 1975 song. I’ll review both of them next week.

Am I Falling In Love With the One That Could Break My Blurbs?

We lost three songs off of the countdown this week, Lose You To Love Me, Bob Dylan and Heartless. LYTLM had a really good run. I’m sad it’s not above the cutoff line, and will therefore not be making the top 45 of 2019. Bob Dylan was mediocre, so I don’t really care that it’s gone, and In Your Eyes >>>>>>>>> Heartless. So y’know.

We lost a Hit-Bound song this week too. Small Talk by Niall Horan. I frankly don’t care that it’s gone. It was just taking up space.

Our losses this week are: Some Kind Of Disaster, Moral of the Story, Teeth, You should be sad and What A Man Gotta Do. I’m pretty sad about Some Kind Of Disaster flopping. Moral of the Story was alright, but it was never gonna do well here. I’m glad we’re finally getting rid of Teeth. You should be sad had a decent run, so I’m not too sad. But you should be. (See what I did there?) And What A Man Gotta Do has been losing its traction, so this makes sense.

Our gains this week are: Level of Concern, The Other Side, Say So and My Oh My. I like Level of Concern and The Other Side, so I’m happy they’re getting success. I don’t really like Say So, so I’m not happy it’s here. My Oh My is okay, but I’m glad it’s getting success here.

We’re finally starting to get rid of some old songs such as Someone You Loved, Easier, Only Human, Graveyard, South of the Border and Nice To Meet Ya. I’m glad they’re starting to move out to make room for other stuff.

Why did RITMO not move? Oh, I’ll tell you why. Because it’s not on the voting poll for no apparent reason.

the other girl left the top 20. Why? This song’s really good and deserves all the success it gets.

Why is Intentions moving so slowly? It’s a near flawless song that really needs to be up in the top 20.

Our #2 is Before You Go. If our #1 ever decides to leave (I hope it doesn’t) I’d be fine with this coming in.

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH I’M BLINDED BY THE LIGHTS!!!

And that is all I have to say. Hope everyone’s safe and not getting too bored.

  6. Not only is Falling back on the poll even though it wasn’t even removed from it, but they now have Trevor Daniel as the song name and Falling as the artist name :wat:

Also I Hope is now unavailable for voting even though it hasn’t even debuted HB yet. Weird.
