Countdown Extra: Don’t Let It Break Your Heart - Louis Tomlinson

Despite debuting pretty low, it’s actually quite a good sign for our next song, since it just came fresh out of one week in Hit-Bound. Blinding Lights by The Weeknd is hands-down my favourite song of the year so far. This is infinitely better than Heartless, as Abel has much more charisma in his voice, and the track works a lot better in this. This song has a great soaring synth-chorus thing, and the 80s vibe fits The Weeknd’s voice nicely. The great part is, this has already hit the top 10 on the Hot 100, and I can definitely see this being a hit here.

Right after that, we have If The World Was Ending by JP Saxe and Julia Michaels. I love this song also. (bad grammar = comedy) (trust me) Both JP and Julia sound really great together, and this song is a super nice ballad with some great writing. I mean, it’s Julia Michaels. If you don’t know what her writing is like, you obviously haven’t heard a song she’s written. And although she’s not the absolute most talented singer out there, she for sure makes up for it. This is a great song that probably won’t gain any traction here.

Apparently we’re going from worst to best on this week’s debuts, because of course my least favourite debut debuts one spot outside the top 20. Rare is Selena’s third single from her album of the same name, and I have to say, I prefered Lose You To Love Me and Look At Her Now. I feel like the simplicity really didn’t work out here. I am starting to get the appeal here, and it is quite catchy, but I just don’t enjoy her voice with the simple bassline and it can get quite boring at times. I would prefer if this was not a bigger hit than Lose You To Love Me, but that’s not really up to me. #voteforloseyoutolovemeeventhoughyoucan’t *i'm pretty sure you know what this sign means at this point

Best Debut: Blinding Lights - The Weeknd

Biggest DROP!!!: Lose You To Love Me - Selena Gomez (-17): Ah shoot. I really wish this was a bigger hit here. I mean, to be fair, it did hit #3, but I wish it stuck around for more than a week after that.

Biggest Jump: The Man - Taylor Swift (+27): Great! I’d love to see this become a hit, and I have no doubt it’ll hit #1 here. Or anywhere, for that matter.

Our first debut this week comes from Alec Benjamin, because Hits 1 can’t let a song by him slip by. However, Oh My God is the best he’s released from this next album. It fixes the problem that every other song from him has, as in it actually has some life to it, although the entire song does kind of feel like it’s building up to something that doesn’t ever actually happen. I’m not sure if I was expecting a drop or something, but there definitely should’ve been something after the chorus.

After that, we have a surprisingly enjoyable song by some dude called Conan Gray. It’s called Maniac, and I actually really like this song. He has a really good voice, and the chorus is one of the catchiest choruses I’ve heard yet this year. Should this be a hit? Yeah, sure why not. This is one of the songs that I love that we get from new artists around this time of year. (Last year, Be Alright, You Say, Eastside) I’d love to see this debut soon.

We also get some more 5 Seconds of Summer this week, because Hits 1. Now, don’t get me wrong, Old Me isn’t bad. It’s not great though. Teeth was for sure better, because the rock vibe added a lot to the song, but this song is honestly kind of forgettable. Which is odd from a 5SOS song, because they always seem to give us pretty catchy stuff.

Finally, we have Modern Loneliness by Lauv. Um. This exists. It’s not good, but it’s not bad… it feels like a bit of a space-filler. The chorus isn’t bad- I mean, the whole song isn’t bad, but the chorus is pretty solid. If I’m being honest, this probably won’t do very well here. Even if it does, I highly doubt it’ll take off anywhere else.

We lost Anyone off of Hit-Bound this week. This is good, because that song was starting to get really grating with Demi sounding like she’s just barely hitting every. single. note.

Off of the countdown, we lost Raising Hell, I Hate LA and Yummy. I honestly don’t care about any of these dropouts. Raising Hell was just kind of boring. But I Hate LA and Yummy were really bad, and it’s glad to see Yummy drop, since I didn’t think Hits 1 would let that happen to a Justin Bieber song.

What Am I looks like it might be on its way out soon. I’m really happy with the amount of success this got, so I’m okay with that.

Some Kind Of Disaster is picking up all kinds of airplay this week, so I’m not too worried about it only jumping one spot.

Glad to see Cuz I Love You and Wanted not performing well.

10/10 jumped over 10 spots this week, and is looking very close to the top 20, which would be great, because I actually kind of love this song.

However, can we please not have Fight in the top 20?

For some reason, I'm really liking You should be sad right now. So that's what's new.

I’m kind of okay with Demons being in the top 20, but did it really have to bring everything i wanted with it?

Before You Go and hot girl bummer made it into the top 10 this week, which is nice since both songs are amazing.

Countdown Extra: If The World Was Ending - JP Saxe/Julia Michaels

Our first debut this week is the fourth single from Taylor Swift’s latest album, Lover, called The Man. This is pretty great. It’s not as good as Paper Rings, which Hits 1 picked up for a couple weeks, but it’s still really solid. The production is great, she sounds amazing, but the best part is probably the writing. The message here is really straight-forward and really great, and I wish more people would listen to the message.

At #37, we have Some Kind Of Disaster by All Time Low. This song is amazing and will for sure hit my year-end list. The instrumentation is really great here, and I feel like everyone in the band has great chemistry and works really well together. The lead singer has some pretty great vocals, and this entire song is super catchy. I love this pop-rock style (note Imagine Dragons being my favourite artists) and I feel like All Time Low really slays it here and delivers everything I was expecting.

Biggest DROP!!!: Push My Luck - The Chainsmokers (-13): I mean, this really didn’t take off anywhere except for here, so I’m not really complaining. However, it wasn’t a bad song, so it does still kind of suck that it dropped this week. At least it got a few weeks in the top 20.

Biggest Jump: hot girl bummer - blackbear (+16): Um. wut. It seems as though this will actually be a top 10 hit here, which I don’t think anyone expected. But I’m super happy about it, so I’m really not complaining.

We actually got six Hit-Bound debuts this week, even though we only got two debuts. Let’s kick it off with new Sam Smith called To Die For. This one is pretty good for the most part. The song’s catchy, Sam sounds good, and the chorus is just outright amazing. But the super odd part, that I can’t really get into, is the sample of the female voice saying “does that scare you?” By itself, it’s not terrible, but in the middle of the song, it’s so awkward and weird, and I just really don’t get it.

We have more Niall Horan with a song that will probably hit #1, we have No Judgement. Yeah, this is pretty good. It’s a little more chill than Nice To Meet Ya, which is probably a good thing, but for me this just doesn’t have enough to it. I can definitely see it growing on me though.

Next up we have another collaboration from Khalid and Disclosure, this one being called Know Your Worth. I feel like Disclosure kind of toned down the production on this one, which makes sense and kind of works with his voice a little more, but I just find this one a little too boring for me. Now, I know, whenever there’s a slower song that isn’t a ballad, I tend to not like it, but it’s just my opinion. I just tend to like more upbeat songs.

Finally Hits 1 gives us what I’ve been asking for for a while now, called Blinding Lights by The Weeknd. I LOVE THIS SONG!!! This is hands-down my favourite song of the year so far. The synth-heavy production works super well with Abel’s voice, and the song is just super catchy. The funny thing is, I almost didn’t even listen to this, because I had heard Heartless and didn’t like it. So yeah, this is a very good thing that this is here.

I’m not sure why we have Falling by Trevor Daniel, but apparently that song’s a thing now. So yeah. He kind of has a whiny voice throughout the whole song, and the entire thing is just kind of weird and I can’t get behind it.

Finally, we have some more Justin Bieber, teaming up with Quavo on Intentions. This was more what I wanted from Yummy, but unfortunately, that one didn’t deliver. The production on this is amazing, and I just love the subtle noises that make the whole track feel more full. Justin sounds great here, and I’m actually pretty surprised Hits 1 kept Quavo on this. He doesn’t add all that much, and I feel it would be better as a whole without him, but it’s still a very solid song.

Some Kind Of Blurb-saster

We lost two countdown songs this week, You Need To Calm Down and Walking. YNTCD was good, but old, and Walking never really took off, so I don’t care about it that much.

We lost four Hit-Bound songs this week, Make It Right, Up All Night, Put A Little Love On Me and Play Your Game. That now brings us to 11 Hit-Bound dropouts in 7 weeks. Which is insane. Make It Right was great, Up All Night and PALLOM were pretty good, and Play Your Game was trash.

Who Do You Love celebrates its one-year anniversary this week. That’s a lot of weeks for a single that didn’t take off anywhere else.

10/10 dropped five spots after jumping ten last week, so that kind of sucks and I wish it was a bigger hit.

Why is Make You Mine still on the countdown, let alone the top 30?

Two songs debuted the top 20 this week, being Say So and Before You Go. BYG is great, so that’s amazing, but Say So really sucks, so that’s not good, I kind of hoped this wouldn’t become a hit, but of course it has to.

Lose You To Love Me fell out of the top 10 entirely, from #3, so that really sucks.

South of the Border and What A Man Gotta Do are both in the top 10 now, which is really amazing.

But for some reason, Adore You kicked Circles off of #1. First of all, Circles still deserves to be #1, and definitely doesn’t deserve to be kicked off by Adore You of all songs.

Pageview Specials Announcement!

So I decided what to do...

There was this really great idea from who I believe was Tacocat, saying to rank every single Fall Out Boy and Post Malone song. So what I decided to do, was that every 10,000 pageviews, I'll rank every single song from a certain artist and I'll have you guys vote on it. I'll only review the songs in very short snippets though, because any more would end up being too much.

So Fall Out Boy should be coming soon, and Post Malone comes when we hit 20K.

But I also got an idea saying that I should make a YouTube channel with more videos like the "We need to talk." post. Personally, I don't think YouTube is really my field, so I might just do a few more posts like that every once in a while. However, I'm still gonna keep the light tone of this blog, so look out for that.

We need to talk.

Okay, this is a little different from my usual posts, but I just felt like I really needed to say something here. I've been waiting for an outlet to say what I needed to for so long, but I guess this is just going to have to do, even though I'm just writing for like twenty people and myself. This is mainly for me, so you don't even have to read this at all if you don't want to, but I just really needed to say something, or else my mind would explode.

Our world needs to change.

Okay, listen, I know you're just here to have a good time, and you really don't want to listen to another one of these, but I just need to do this. I have a feeling that someone out there right now, really needs to hear this. Our world is literally falling apart. We have divisions everywhere, and the wrong people are in control of our countries. I know there are good people out there. They're just too afraid to show themselves. But we need to band together, because if we don't, nothing's going to get better. I know we don't even know each other, and I'm just some random guy on the Internet that writes about a music countdown of all things, but our generation has to be the one that changes stuff. I know we can do it. We've already shown that we're capable of caring about things, and we're very passionate about issues. There is hope, even though sometimes it seems like there isn't. There are people who care. But we can't just sit here and do nothing. We need to stand up for our rights and our freedoms, and we need to show these older generations that we're not just some kids addicted to technology. So speak up, and show the world what you're capable of. Because together, I know that we can do this. Our world needs to see what we're capable of and they need to know that we're not messing around. So make a change.

Countdown Extra: Some Kind Of Disaster - All Time Low

Our first of four debuts this week is Heartless by The Weeknd. And at this point, I’m seriously not sure why this is here, because this is clearly the more trap-sounding song, and Blinding Lights is right now higher than Heartless on the Hot 100. I still don’t really like this. I don’t like the lyrics here, since they’re all about him being “heartless” and how he’s going to abandon anyone. This isn’t good. It’s not very interesting at all, and there’s just nothing here that appeals to me. *2 weeks in Hit-Bound, 3 weeks on Voting Poll

At #36, we have more Alec Benjamin (who else) with Demons. Meh. This is alright. I feel like I’m turning around a bit on this one though. I used to not like it, but then I realized it’s actually not that bad. I mean, sure his vocals could use a bit of work, and the whole thing is a little underwhelming, but it’s still fairly solid. It’s honestly not terrible at all, and I think I definitely judged it before I got a good opinion on it. It’s still not good though.

Next up, we have You should be sad by Halsey. And yeah, this is one of the better Halsey songs. She actually sounds really good, and it’s very catchy. The writing is easily the best part of this song, and yeah. This is really good. For the most part. Again, it’s slightly underwhelming, like Demons, but a little less so.

Finally, at #26, we have Before You Go by Lewis Capaldi. I’m glad to see Lewis getting another debut here, since he’s actually really good. I know a lot of people don’t like him, but I still don’t get it. I think his voice is actually really great. I see nothing grating about it. This song is honestly probably better than Someone You Loved. The writing is for sure better, as it’s about one of his friends that left this world a little too early. This is a great ballad.

Biggest DROP!!!: How Do You Sleep? - Sam Smith (-21): This was definitely due. This stayed up in the top 20 for too many weeks, even though it wasn’t even that big.

So our first debut this week is the big return of Demi Lovato, after what happened to her, with Anyone. This is pretty good. It’s a very solid ballad, and I can find tons of things to like about it, but it’s just really not my style. However, this still is a great song.

Next up we have Nice to Meet Ya by Meghan Trainor and Nicki Minaj. (Notice the lowercase “to”. That’s gonna be very important for blurbs when this debuts, or else things are gonna get really confusing) Probably my favourite part about this song is imagining Meghan’s reaction when Niall came out with his song. There’s nothing really special about this song, but it’s not horrible.

Next up we have another song by blackbear, called me & ur ghost. This one, I’m less surprised that it’s here, since it sounds more pop-y than hot girl bummer. Is this better than hgb? I’m seriously not sure. Both songs are so drastically different, that it’s hard to pair them against each other. Although there are some continuity errors here. In the chorus, he says he threw out his phone, but in the bridge, he says he doesn’t know what to do with the pictures on his iPhone. So unless he threw out his landline, this doesn’t make much sense. Although I don’t know why he hasn’t thrown out his landline yet.

The best debut this week comes from JP Saxe and Julia Michaels. It’s called If The World Was Ending, and the story here is that there was this huge earthquake that scared everyone. Then there are these two exes who broke up for whatever reason, and they’re wondering if this is it, and if it doesn’t matter anyways, would they stay with each other? This is such a sweet story, and I can kind of see this becoming a movie. But for the time being, I think both artists deliver really well here and help bring the story to life.

Next we have another song from Dua Lipa’s next album, Future Nostalgia, called Physical. This is pretty good. This isn’t exactly for me right now, but I can for sure see this growing on me like Don’t Start Now did. This is looking to be a pretty good album.

Before You Blurb

This week, we lost Panini, Trampoline, Mother and We Made It. Panini was pretty good, but Hits 1 picked up on it on its decline. So it wasn’t destined to last very long. Trampoline was one of the best songs of 2019, but it was getting a little old at this point. Mother was terrible, and not even big, so it really didn’t deserve to be here. And We Made It was kind of forgettable.

What Am I dropped eleven spots this week, which kind of sucks, but it was kind of old.

Raising Hell also dropped. Whatever.

So for some reason, Yummy is becoming a hit. Please no.

hot girl bummer is up in the top 30, which is for sure good.

Dance Monkey is really close to hitting the top 20. Come on, Hits 1. Let me have one thing here.

ROXANNE is back in the top 20, which is great.

Don’t Start Now made it into the top 5! YAY! I’d love to see this hit #1.

Adore You is up at #2, which is scary. Hopefully Circles blocks this off before Don’t Start Now hits #1.

Also, we lost Good Thing. I can't believe this didn't debut the countdown, because it seems like exactly the type of song that Hits 1 loves. Oh well.

Countdown Extra: Demons - Alec Benjamin

Our first debut this week comes from Rex Orange County, and I have to say, 10/10 really grew on me. I honestly didn’t expect this to be that good. But I like his voice a lot, and I find it kind of catchy. The whole song is a little repetitive, but I think it’s still pretty great. Next up, we have Fight by Tayla Parx and Florida Georgia Line. I actually forgot that Hits 1 stans FGL’s pop/country songs before this got picked up. This is pretty good. I think Tayla, Tyler and Brian all have some pretty good chemistry. They all have really good voices and it’s decently catchy. It’s pretty good, but not great. *2 weeks in Hit-Bound, 4 weeks on Voting Poll

At #32, we have Cuz I Love You by Lizzo. I don’t really want any more Lizzo songs. None of them are good. (Except maybe Good As Hell.) This isn’t as terrible as Truth Hurts, but it’s still really bad. It suffers from the same issues. Her voice is terrible, the instrumentation is generic, and it’s way too catchy for its own good. So yeah, this really isn’t good. *5 weeks in Hit-Bound, 6 weeks on Voting Poll

And for our best debut, a top 20 debut actually, we have What A Man Gotta Do by the Jonas Brothers. (Of course.) This song is great. These guys keep making absolute bangers, and I hope they never stop. This song is better than Only Human, and maybe even better than Sucker. The energy in this song is perfect. They seem super excited to be alive, and it’s infectious. So yeah, a really great song, and I have no doubt this will hit #1. *1 week in Hit-Bound, 2 weeks on Voting Poll

Replacing Paper Rings this week we have The Man by Taylor Swift, which I guess makes sense since it’s being pushed as a single, but I really would’ve rather had Paper Rings. Anyways, The Man is pretty good. The writing is easily the best part of this song, with Taylor singing about how if she was a man, how different her life would be. The production is alright, and it’s still pretty catchy, but I feel like Paper Rings is still so much better. Oh well.

Who Do You Love finally hit the bottom 5. This took too long.

My Oh My is really close to the top 20, so that’s really good.

Don’t Start Now left the top 10. This is unfair.

So now’s normally when I would do the album of the week, but this weekend, I just never got around to listening to Eminem’s new album. I knew I wasn’t gonna get this post out on time if I tried to listen to it, and honestly the album reviews are a lot of work, because of how many songs you have to listen to. So I might do it next week, but we’ll see.
