Hot 100 Overview: Week of March 20, 2021 - Drake (1)

Drake (1)
Hey everybody! It was an extremely active week this week, so I won't stretch out this intro too much. Just one thing: I've decided to close submissions for Blogger March Madness 2021 on Sunday, so make sure you get your submissions in by then! New music on this post from Drake, Justin Bieber, Juice WRLD and more!

The Top 10
#1: What's Next - Drake (DEBUT) [1st week at #1] {1 week}
#2: Wants and Needs - Drake/Lil Baby (DEBUT) [#2] {1 week}
#3: Lemon Pepper Freestyle - Drake/Rick Ross (DEBUT) [#3] {1 week}
#4: Leave The Door Open - Silk Sonic (DEBUT) [#4] {1 week}
#5: drivers license - Olivia Rodrigo (-4) [8 weeks at #1] {9 weeks}
#6: Up - Cardi B (-4) [#2] {5 weeks}
#7: Save Your Tears - The Weeknd (-1) [#4] {13 weeks}
#8: Blinding Lights - The Weeknd (-5) [4 weeks at #1] {66 weeks}
#9: 34+35 - Ariana Grande (-5) [#2] {19 weeks}
#10: Mood - 24kGoldn/iann dior (-3) [8 weeks at #1] {31 weeks}

This top 10 is much more active than it's been the past few weeks, so that's good. Obviously the big story of the week is the three Drake songs debuting at the top. I'll get onto my opinion on those later, but this is also the first time in history that the entire top 4 has been debuts, which is crazy. drivers license fell to #5, but it could go back to #1 unless Leave The Door Open or Up go to #1 because of the Grammys. Also, it's absolutely ridiculous that Blinding Lights is still here.

Debuts

#1: What's Next - Drake

So with the release of Scary Hours 2, every song from it debuts at the top of the chart, which is absolutely insane. Anyways, this is the single from it, What's Next and it's our new #1. This song's pretty good. Drake actually sounds like he cares about the song, which is nice. The hook is also decently catchy. My only real problem with this is that the production can get kind of annoying because it's repetitive. But that's about it, this is still good.

#2: Wants and Needs - Drake/Lil Baby

The second song from Scary Hours 2 is next and it debuts at #2 this week. I only really have two problems with this. The first is that at the start of the song, Drake is really off time with the music and the second thing is that Lil Baby doesn't sound great in the hook. It's definitely not his worst performance, though, so it's fine. Plus, he sounds good in his verse, kind of like how he sounded in The Bigger Picture, which is my favourite song from him. This is good and I can actually see this sticking around for a while.

#3: Lemon Pepper Freestyle - Drake/Rick Ross

This is my favourite song from Scary Hours 2. Both artists sound really good here and the sample actually works really well with the song. That's it, just a solid song.

#4: Leave The Door Open - Silk Sonic

I'm pretty sure everybody knows that this song exists at this point. I never really expected it to debut so high though and yeah, if Scary Hours 2 came out a week later, this would've been the #1 song. Anyways, I think this song's alright, Bruno sounds really good here, but it's only slightly boring and it doesn't feel like it should be on the radio. Still solid though and I definitely don't hate it.

#26: Hold On - Justin Bieber

This was a promotional single from Justin Bieber's new album, Justice, which came out yesterday. This definitely isn't the best of the singles so far, but it's not the worst either. He sounds good here and the melody's good. My only issue with it is that I think there should've been a little more production in the chorus, as it's really just the bassline and I think it would have benefited from some more production. This may not stay here for much longer.

#34: Real As It Gets - Lil Baby/EST Gee

This is definitely the worst Lil Baby song that debuted this week. He doesn't really sound good here at all and while I think the production's pretty good, his voice just brings it down a lot. EST Gee has a pretty good verse here, though.

#54: Beautiful Mistakes - Maroon 5/Megan Thee Stallion

This really didn't debut as high as I expected it too. It kind of sucks too, because I do like this song. I already talked about this song literally today, so all I'll say is that I hope it sticks around for a bit and does better than Nobody's Love did.

#74: Hellcats & Trackhawks - Only The Family/Lil Durk

This is a pretty bad song. There's way too much stuff happening in the production that it almost feels crowded. Lil Durk also doesn't sound that good here and nothing about this works. Next.

#97: Life's A Mess II - Juice WRLD/Clever/Post Malone

So apparently this was the original mix of the Juice WRLD song that featured Halsey that popped up in his 2020 album Legends Never Die. I liked this song a lot when it was just the original and this version goes for a bit more of an acoustic sound and I think it works extremely well with Juice WRLD's voice and it really shows off how good his voice was. Both Clever and Post Malone have decent verses here, but Halsey's verse being gone is still a loss. She/they really worked well with the song and it kind of sucks to not have her/them on this version, but I still really enjoy this version.

#100: Lil Bit - Nelly/Florida Georgia Line

This song should be at least decent, but it really wasn't executed well. The song that these guys did together from a while back, Cruise, was great, but this really isn't. The verses are decent, but then they go to the chorus and it just feels like it should evolve more than it does. It really doesn't though and then I come to the fact that the FGL guys don't sound that great and it really brings the song down.

Best Debut: Life's A Mess II - Juice WRLD/Clever/Post Malone

Worst Debut: Hellcats & Trackhawks - Only The Family/Lil Durk

Losses
#24: For The Night - Pop Smoke/Lil Baby/DaBaby (-10) [#6] {36 weeks}
#25: Beat Box 2 / 3 - SpottemGottem/Pooh Shiesty / DaBaby (-10) [#15] {8 weeks}
#29: Whoopty - CJ (-11) [#10] {18 weeks}
#33: GOOD TIME - Niko Moon (-13) [#20] {23 weeks}
#42: willow - Taylor Swift (-10) [1 week at #1] {13 weeks}
#44: WITHOUT YOU - The Kid LAROI (-10) [#34] {14 weeks}
#46: Throat Baby (Go Baby) - BRS Kash (-18) [#24] {21 weeks}
#48: Down To One - Luke Bryan (-12) [#36] {11 weeks}
#49: Holy - Justin Bieber/Chance the Rapper (-20) [#3] {25 weeks}
#69: Beers And Sunshine - Darius Rucker (-16) [#42] {13 weeks}
#81: Lifestyle - Jason Derulo/Adam Levine (-10) [#71] {5 weeks}
#87: Neighbors - Pooh Shiesty/BIG30 (-11) [#51] {5 weeks}
#91: Finesse Out The Gang Way - Lil Durk/Lil Baby (-12) [#39] {6 weeks}
#94: Tyler Herro - Jack Harlow (-16) [#34] {20 weeks}
#99: AP - Pop Smoke (-35) [#64] {2 weeks}

Wow, this is a big list. Alright, let's do this: For The Night is good but old, Beat Box never should've jumped, Whoopty deserved to be a bigger hit, GOOD TIME faded on me, so I don't care, willow was always good, but I'm satisfied with the amount of success it got, WITHOUT YOU is great and I'm sad that it's fading, Throat Baby isn't memorable whatsoever, same with Down To One, Holy is great but old, Beers And Sunshine was never good, Lifestyle was good but was never destined to become a hit, Neighbors is forgettale, FOTGW is good, so it sucks that it's leaving, Tyler Herro's kind of old and would've been gone next week anyways because of recurrents and AP isn't the best Pop Smoke song, so I'm not disappointed that it had no longevity here.

Gains
#30: What's Your Country Song - Thomas Rhett (+14) [#30] {12 weeks} *new peak*
#37: Astronaut In The Ocean - Masked Wolf (+12) [#37] {4 weeks} *new peak*
#82: Breaking Up Was Easy In The 90's - Sam Hunt (+10) [#82] {2 weeks} *new peak*
#85: Pick Up Your Feelings - Jazmine Sullivan (+10) [#85] {7 weeks} *new peak*

I'm quite glad that Astronaut In The Ocean and Pick Up Your Feelings are doing well and I really don't care about the other two.

Dropouts
I Hope - Gabby Barrett/Charlie Puth (#24) [#3] {62 weeks}
Bang! - AJR (#35) [#8] {35 weeks}
Lemonade - Internet Money/Gunna/Don Toliver/NAV (#38) [#6] {29 weeks}
Lonely - Justin Bieber/benny blanco (#41) [#12] {20 weeks}
Laugh Now Cry Later - Drake/Lil Durk (#47) [#2] {29 weeks}
Only Wanna Be With You (Pokémon 25 Version) - Post Malone (#74) [#74] {1 week}
hole in the bottle - Kelsea Ballerini (#89) [#39] {20 weeks}
Drunk (And I Don't Wanna Go Home) - Elle King/Miranda Lambert (#90) [#90] {1 week}
Like I Want You - Giveon (#98) [#95] {3 weeks}
BICHOTA - KAROL G (#100) [#72] {13 weeks}

I Hope, Bang!, Lemonade and Laugh Now Cry Later were all good, but they had good runs here, so I'm satisfied. Lonely probably shouldn't have been a hit. It sucks that the two best debuts from last week only lasted a week and it also sucks that hole in the bottle had to flop right as I was getting into it. Like I Want You wasn't good, so I'm not disappointed and BICHOTA was never gonna last after its re-entry last week.

Kwaheri, everybody! See you all in the next one.

Week of March 20, 2021 - Olivia Rodrigo (4)

Hello, everybody! Just one announcement this week and that's the fact that I decided to close submissions for Blogger March Madness tomorrow, so if you haven't submitted yet, you should do it before then. Also, if you need a small extension of time, I can do that for you. This week's Countdown wasn't particularly interesting or particularly good for that matter. But, a countdown is still a countdown, so let's start with this week's lone exit.

*They actually played the original version, but I'm pretty sure it's a mistake, as the Demi Lovato remix was playing all week and later when Spyder Harrison recapped the last five, he mentioned Demi Lovato

Last Year's #1: Adore You - Harry Styles [6/10 weeks at #1]

Countdown Extra: Follow You - Imagine Dragons

Our only debut this week is, to nobody's surprise, Beautiful Mistakes by Maroon 5 featuring Megan Thee Stallion. After Memories and Nobody's Love, I wasn't too excited for this, but seeing that Megan Thee Stallion was featuring, it raised my hopes a little. This song is definitely better than both of the songs that previously mentioned. The song as a whole is more interesting, there's better production and Megan really spices it up. Good song, I hope it does better than Memories... yeah, I'm still not sure how that was as big of a hit as it was.

Biggest DROP!!!: Lasting Lover - Sigala/James Arthur (-7): Aw, it really sucks that this song's dropping, especially right as I was growing back into it.

Biggest Jump: Overdrive - Conan Gray (+9): On the other hand, I'm really happy that this song's in the top 15 and I'd love to see this be a top 5 hit here and I think it has a good chance at that.

#1 Recommendation for Hits 1: This Is Heaven - Nick Jonas

My Favourite Song Last Year: Blinding Lights - The Weeknd

My Least Favourite Song Last Year: everything i wanted - Billie Eilish

Most Missed Countdown Song: I Bet My Life - Imagine Dragons

Hit-Bound
2Drunk - Nick Jonas [2]
Provide - G-Eazy/Chris Brown/Mark Morrison [5]
CHICKEN TENDIES - Clinton Kane [1]
First Time - ILLENIUM/iann dior [1]
Goosebumps (Remix) - Travis Scott/HVME [6]
Too Late - Cash Cash/Wiz Khalifa/Lukas Graham [2]
Remember That Night? - Sara Kays [6]
Good Days - SZA [2; 2nd time]
Follow You - Imagine Dragons [1]
Bad Girl - Daya [4]
Beginning Middle End - Leah Nobel [4]
The Business - Tiësto [4]
Sacrifice - Bebe Rexha [2]
acting like that - YUNGBLUD/Machine Gun Kelly [2]
Calling My Phone - Lil Tjay/6LACK [2]

I've already reviewed this next song on my Hot 100 posts. It's CHICKEN TENDIES by Clinton Kane and honestly, I'm surprised that it wasn't picked up sooner by Hits 1, especially considering Hits 1 discovered Clinton Kane. Anyways, I really like this song, I think it's much better than Fix It to Break It. He sounds better here and the chorus just has more substance to it. This is a great song and I hope it debuts the Countdown.

ILLENIUM scored his first song on Hits 1 a couple of years ago, with Takeaway with The Chainsmokers, which ended up dropping out of Hit-Bound. I think the only reason that he has another song here is because this time, he decided to collaborate with One to Watch alumni iann dior. This actually isn't even iann dior's first EDM song, as he released Higher with Clean Bandit earlier this year and now here he is with First Time. This is a really good song. It's more EDM/Pop-Rock, like what we heard in Come & Go by Juice WRLD and Marshmello from last year. I don't think that this was executed quite as well as that song was, but iann dior sounds good and I think the drop was well-done. Good song.

After two and a half years, Imagine Dragons, my favourite artists by the way, have released new music from an upcoming fifth album. And honestly? This isn't their best comeback ever. The other song that they released is called Cutthroat and if you haven't listened to it, I'll break it down for you. Remember Machine from 2019? So the amount of yelling in that, except turned up to 10 and with a pretty good instrumental. So yeah, it's not great. Anyways, this new one, Follow You was pretty underwhelming at first, especially considering that they tend to come back with more epic songs like Believer or Natural, but with more listens, I've been liking it more and more. The chorus is actually really good and Dan Reynolds sounds good here even if he has some weird vocal effects on his voice in the verses. So yeah, I like this and I'd love to see it become a hit.

Best Debut: Follow You - Imagine Dragons

I Already Did One of These for Beautiful Mistakes and I'm Just Realizing Now That That Wasn't a Very Blurb-iful Mistake

Our sole (did I use that right?) exit for this week was Lifestyle. I never really expected this to do great anywhere, so I'm not too disappointed that it more or less flopped here.

So LILHUDDY has been confirmed to be our next One to Watch and honestly, I think he has the second-best One to Watch song after Let There Be Love by Ananya Birla. Maybe Sara Kays would've been an alright choice for this, but I'm far from disappointed.

Way Less Sad has finally decided to jump, so that's good and I hope that it keeps jumping.

Okay, Fly Away can leave aaaaaaaany time now.

I'm not Pretty actually managed to stay on the Countdown after getting the One to Watch treatment, something that only two other artists have managed to do: Zoe Wees and Ashe.

So somehow Treat People With Kindness dropped this week, but somehow, I have this feeling that this isn't the end of it.

But replacing TPWK is My Head & My Heart and I'm very happy that it managed to make it this high. Fun fact: Every Ava Max song that's debuted the Countdown has made it into the top 10.

you broke me first is a top 5 hit now, I guess. I don't know, this song is starting to get kind of old.

willow is also up to #3 and I can definitely see this hitting #1 sometime soon, which I'd be fine with.

Oh yeah, Hit-Bound Dropouts! This week, we lost Best Friend and slower. I don't really care about either, as I never really liked Best Friend and slower only lasted a week and wasn't fantastic.

Countdown Extra: Beginning Middle End - Leah Nobel

So after just a couple of weeks, Masked Wolf scored his first song on the Weekend Countdown with Astronaut In The Ocean debuting at #30 this week. I really enjoy this song and I'm really glad that Hits 1 decided to let this onto the Countdown. Masked Wolf has really great flow here and he switches it a lot. His voice sounds great here and he even does a really good job with the catchy hook. Apparently, this was actually released in 2019, so I'm glad that TikTok got its hands on it so that it could be a hit.

So with 24kGoldn becoming a host on Hits 1, they've probably decided to let all of his songs on the Countdown, as 3, 2, 1 debuts this week. I kind of wish that this happened earlier, because then we would've gotten Coco here, but whatever. This song is definitely growing on me. 24kGoldn sounds pretty great here and the instrumentation is really great and really helps the song a lot. The hook is also catchy. Not Mood catchy, but catchy in its own right. I'm really happy that this is here and I hope that it can stick around for a while here.

I guess it's a thing now for TikTok superstars to start doing music, as LILHUDDY now has a song called The Eulogy of You and Me and despite his artist name, this is a pop-rock song? I will definitely take that even though I'm really confused. I bet you anything that Travis Barker had something to do with this. (Checks credits) Haha called it. Anyways, I think LILHUDDY actually sounds pretty good here and the instrumentation is honestly great. The only issue that I have with this is that the lyrics are really weird and some of them are honestly just really bad. "Now you're dead to me, and it's R.I.P." for example. But whatever, I still like this song.

Next up is Silk Sonic, which is actually a duo comprised of Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak. Yes, this is Bruno Mars' first song in literally forever. I think both of the guys sound really good here and the production's decent, but it feels a little boring. I don't know, maybe that's just me, but I just get a little bored listening to this. I'm just not so sure it's a great radio song.

Ashe and FINNEAS have collaborated again. The last time that happened, FINNEAS produced Ashe's Moral of the Story, which was fine until Niall Horan jumped on it, so I guess I had mediocre expectations for this? Anyways, this song's called Till Forever Falls Apart and it's not bad. So far, I've found Ashe's music to be a little bland and lacking in production. I don't really think that changed too much here. It's slightly more interesting than MotS and Save Myself, and both Ashe and FINNEAS sound good together, but like the previous song, I get a little bored listening to this. I think the melody writing in the chorus was decent though and this will probably do quite well here because it's Ashe and Hits 1 discovered her.

forget me too re-entered at a pretty high #15 this week and all I have to say is that I'm not sure why it left in the first place. I hope it decides to stay here for a little while now.

Best Debut: Astronaut In The Ocean - Masked Wolf

Biggest DROP!!!: Levitating - Dua Lipa/DaBaby (-4): This wasn't too much of a drop, but it still looks like this will be gone in a few weeks' time. I'm not too upset about that, as it's getting a little old and I'm satisfied with how well it did here, but it's still a good song.

Biggest Jump: I'm not Pretty - JESSIA & We're Good - Dua Lipa (+7): Nice to see I'm not Pretty rebounding and now I actually have hopes that it'll manage to stick around after it's not the One to Watch anymore. As for We're Good, fine, I guess? I don't know, I don't really care about this song at all.

This first new Hit-Bound song was actually featured on the very first episode of The Goldn Hour (which I stopped reviewing, by the way, because it's hardly a show). That's right, acting like that by YUNGBLUD and Machine Gun Kelly debuts Hit-Bound this week. I've really enjoyed what MGK has had to bring as of late and I think him switching to pop-rock was definitely a good move for him. If he continues like this, I could become somewhat of an MGK fan. Anyways, this is the first YUNGBLUD song that we've had here since 11 Minutes in 2019 and I liked that song and I like this song too. Both artists sound great here and the instrumentation is literally on point. The chorus is also really catchy and I just love everything about this song and I hope it doesn't take too long to debut.

Well, this is definitely not the recent rap hit that I expected to cross over onto Hits 1. Rather than bringing Up by Cardi B to Hit-Bound this week, Hits 1 actually decided to throw a curveball and choose Calling My Phone by Lil Tjay and 6LACK for a Hit-Bound debut this week. This song's fine. It's not one of the most interesting rap hits that we've had in the past year, but it's definitely not bad. Both artists do a pretty good job here and while the sample is weird, it still kind of works. It's a little boring, though and the production isn't all too interesting. I'm still not disappointed that it's here, though.

Geez, we sure have had a lot of Wiz Khalifa recently on Hit-Bound. Hopefully this will be the first Wiz Khalifa song to debut this year, as it's probably my favourite of the three so far. Anyways, this next song is Too Late by Cash Cash, Wiz Khalifa and Lukas Graham. I'm really enjoying this song. We haven't really heard from Lukas Graham since he had that decent-sized hit from a few years ago, Love Someone and I've always liked his stuff. I think he has a good voice and he was definitely a good choice for the hook in this song. Personally, I think he should've been given a hook rather than it just being Wiz Khalifa, but I don't really care. The thing that really ties this song together, though, is Cash Cash. They do such a good job with the production here and it makes the song super interesting. The drop is really well done and I think they did well with the rest of the production too. Kind of ominous lyrics, but I still really enjoy this song.

Good Days left the Countdown and re-entered Hit-Bound this week. I don't care too much, but I'm glad it's not gone, I guess.

Oh yeah, Bebe Rexha. Baby, I'm Jealous was so forgettable that I'm gonna count this song, Sacrifice as her big return. Anyways, this song's pretty good. Bebe Rexha has always had a good voice and I think it shines pretty well here. There's also a drop here, and it's decently well-done. I'd like to see this on the Countdown, that would be fun.

I guess Nick Jonas is going solo again, as he just released an album called Spaceman. A week ago, he released a song from that called This Is Heaven and I really like that song. But instead, Hits 1 decided to choose 2Drunk to add to Hit-Bound this week. Don't get me wrong, this is still a good song and I'm definitely intrigued as to what else this album has to offer, but This Is Heaven is really good. Anyways, onto this song. It's a lot of fun, it's catchy and Nick Jonas sounds pretty good here. I'd like to see this on the Countdown, but I'd also like to see This Is Heaven here. I don't know, I guess we'll see.

Tate McRae has now had three songs on Hits 1, as slower debuts Hit-Bound this week. This is fine. I think it's slightly better than rubberband, as the production actually has something going on it. It's still pretty boring, though. Not much else to add about this.

If the Blurb Takes California (BUM BUM BUM)

There were five Countdown exits that I haven't talked about yet: Go Crazy, Skin, Afterglow, Love Story and 34+35. For Go Crazy, it was quite good and I'm sad that it didn't do better here. Skin was only alright, so I'm not all that sad that it flopped. Afterglow was really good and I wish that it was a much bigger hit. I'm not entirely sure what happened with Love Story, as it debuted really high, then just lost all of its momentum. Even though it wasn't a radio song, I was hoping Hits 1 would let it do well anyways. Oh well. As for 34+35, it was fine and although it doesn't make much sense that it's gone, I don't really care that much.

Four Hit-Bound exits this week too. cheers, too many feelings, Talk About Love and Cry Over Boys. cheers was quite good and I'm sad it didn't debut. It kind of sucks that too many feelings was never really given a shot, as it was also decent. Talk About Love was good, but kind of forgettable, so whatever. As for Cry Over Boys, it was extremely forgettable, so I don't care at all that it's gone.

Sucks that Way Less Sad isn't jumping like I hoped it would.

I really hope that Overdrive keeps jumping, because I really like it.

My Head & My Heart jumped back up to its peak of #14 this week, which is great. I hope this can manage to out-peak her other songs and hit #1.

Lasting Lover is hanging right outside the top 10 and I really really hope that it can make it into the top 10.

Why is Golden back up at #2? This should be Save Your Tears at #2. I just hope that it ends up dropping again.
