Hot 100 Top 40: Week of July 11, 2020 - DaBaby/Roddy Ricch (4)

DaBaby/Roddy Ricch (4)

The #1 this week is still awesome, and we had a fantastic debut, with exits that I'm very happy about. We got a surprising but welcome #2, and a rather unwelcome #10. As for On the Verge... that's another story.

#1: ROCKSTAR - DaBaby/Roddy Ricch (-) [4th week at #1] {11 weeks}

Last Year's #1: Old Town Road (Remix) - Lil Nas X/Billy Ray Cyrus [14/19 weeks at #1]

Our lowest entrant this year is a re-entry from Be Kind, which left last week, and I'm definitely happy that it's back. Hopefully, it can stick around for a while more.

Next up is a Hot 100 debut, How You Like That by BLACKPINK. Although this is k-pop, it's not terrible. The verses are actually quite good, and the production's really good. I don't love the weird production in the chorus though. The rapping in the second verse is alright, although definitely not as good as the first verse. But yeah, overall, this is solid.

I reviewed this song last week, and now I know the backstory behind it. So basically, there was an instrumental loop called Laxed - Siren Beat, by Jawsh 685, and it became a trend on TikTok. Then Jason Derulo made lyrics to it on his TikTok account, and people told him he should record it, so he did, and called it Savage Love, and here it is, in the top 40 on the Hot 100. The production is fantastic, and Jason Derulo sounds incredible. Especially in the verses. It's also incredibly catchy, and I seriously can't get enough of this song, so much so that it even bests ROCKSTAR. Fantastic song. I love this so much.

After the success of Savage, Megan Thee Stallion made another single, called Girls in the Hood, and it's making its debut here, and I quite like it. I really liked Savage, and this is definitely not a step down. Megan has great flow, and of course, the production is great here, and really cool. The chimes are really cool, and you can hear little licks of the production in Savage if you listen closely. Yeah, good song.

Tory Lanez, DaBaby and Lil Wayne made a remix of Jack Harlow's WHATS POPPIN, and it's fantastic. Most artists here do a really good job. I say most, because although Jack Harlow, Tory Lanez, and DaBaby do a good job, Lil Wayne's verse isn't great, but that's just because it's Lil Wayne. This remix brought this song up to #2, and it definitely deserves it. Great song.

Best T40 Entrant: Savage Love (Laxed - Siren Beat) - Jawsh 685/Jason Derulo

Biggest Drop: The Bigger Picture - Lil Baby (-7): I knew this wasn't gonna be a hit, but I'm really sad that it got replaced with We Paid.

Biggest Jump: We Paid - Lil Baby/42 Dugg & Watermelon Sugar - Harry Styles (+8): I'm pretty happy Watermelon Sugar is getting success, even though I think it's old. We Paid, on the other hand, is really bad and shouldn't be anywhere near the top 10.

My Top 5 Picks
#5: Rain On Me - Lady Gaga/Ariana Grande
#4: Hard To Forget - Sam Hunt
#3: High Fashion - Roddy Ricch/Mustard
#2: ROCKSTAR - DaBaby/Roddy Ricch
#1: Savage Love (Laxed - Siren Beat) - Jawsh 685/Jason Derulo

My Bottom 5 Picks
#5: Emotionally Scarred - Lil Baby
#4: Bluebird - Miranda Lambert
#3: death bed (coffee for your head) - Powfu/beabadoobee

On the Verge
Supalonely - BENEE/Gus Dapperton
Memories - Maroon 5 (OtV RE-ENTRY)
Nobody But You - Blake Shelton/Gwen Stefani
Dior - Pop Smoke
Die From A Broken Heart - Maddie & Tae
hot girl bummer - blackbear
Here And Now - Kenny Chesney (OtV RE-ENTRY)
I Love My Country - Florida Georgia Line
Wash Us In The Blood - Kanye West/Travis Scott (H100 DEBUT)
If the World Was Ending - JP Saxe/Julia Michaels
Like That - Doja Cat/Gucci Mane (OtV DEBUT)
Got What I Got - Jason Aldean (OtV DEBUT)
Does To Me - Luke Combs/Eric Church
TROLLZ - 6ix9ine/Nicki Minaj (OtV RE-ENTRY)
GOOBA - 6ix9ine

Three songs that left the Top 40 this week re-entered On the Verge, Memories, Here And Now and TROLLZ. Memories and TROLLZ are crap, so I'm glad to see them out of the Top 40, and Here And Now was just alright, so I'm not sad it dropped off of the Top 40 after one week.

Our first actual new song in On the Verge is from Kanye West and Travis Scott, called Wash Us In The Blood. I actually quite like this. Other than the screaming samples, which I could do without, both Kanye and Travis Scott do a really good job here. I like the production too. But yeah, Travis is easily the best part of this song, as he's the best part of every song. But yeah, I like this.

Another On the Verge debut is a song that's on Hits 1, Like That by Doja Cat and Gucci Mane. I pretty much still stand by what I said when I reviewed it for my Countdown posts. I like the chorus, and I like Gucci Mane's verse, but I don't like Doja Cat's verse, because I don't love Doja's rapping voice.

Our last debut is a country song by Jason Aldean, Got What I Got. This song is extremely boring, which is why I don't like it. The heavy guitar really doesn't sound good with this, and Jason doesn't have the voice to do a ballad (I mean, if I'm being honest, no country artist has the voice to do a ballad). Yeah, this really isn't good.

Best On the Verge Debut: Wash Us In The Blood - Kanye West/Travis Scott

Your Savage Blurbs, Your Savage Blur-Blur-Blurbs

Our only real exit from the Top 40 this week is BLACK PARADE by Beyoncé. I'm not sad this is gone.

High Fashion dropped a lot this week, and I'm kind of sad because it's quite good. I like Roddy Ricch a lot.

Toosie Slide dropped out of the top 20 this week. I'm not too sad to see it go.

Stuck with U also took a tumble, so I'm not quite sure if it's gonna actually be a hit or not, despite what Hits 1 says.

I switched Life Is Good to blue, because although I hate Future's verse, I just love Drake's verse.

Bang! by AJR is swiftly climbing up the chart, so it could very likely debut On the Verge soon.

I also realized that I actually like the version of I Hope without Charlie Puth more than the one with Puth. I think Gabby Barrett actually delivers the second verse better than him, although the last chorus feels a little empty. So yeah, I'm sad this dropped out of the top 20.

Break My Heart entered the top 20, Hopefully, it'll hit #1 on Hits 1 soon. I mean, come on. Dua deserves it.

Savage dropped a couple spots. I guess it's losing traction.

ROCKSTAR's still holding at #1, and I'm really happy, and I hope it stays at #1 for a few more weeks before WHATS POPPIN probably dethrones it.

We lost a few On the Verge songs this week; I Hope You're Happy Now, everything i wanted, Snow On Tha Bluff and After A Few. I didn't care about any of these songs, so I don't care that they're gone.

That's all for today! Kwaheri, everybody, and see you all tomorrow!

Countdown Extra: 17 - Pink Sweat$

Hits 1 to Watch: Control - Zoe Wees

MAMACITA re-entered this week at #30. It didn’t need to leave last week, it easily could’ve just stayed on the Countdown. Whatever, I’m still glad it’s here.

So Hits 1 restarting something they used to do, called the Hits 1s to Watch. So basically, they just highlight an up and coming artist and their newest song. The first Hits 1 to Watch is Zoe Wees, and with the push, she actually debuted this week with Control. This song’s alright. She kind of reminds me of a female Lewis Capaldi with better production. I actually kind of like her voice (in case you haven’t been able to tell, Capaldi, Breaking Me, etc.) and the production in this song is great. It has this cool beat with some heavy reverb in the verses, and it makes for some very interesting production. The song can get a bit boring though, and that’s my biggest problem with it, but that blue is definitely leaning more towards green than red. Oh also, I’m pretty sure it’s in the same key as Midnight, and the two choruses are actually quite similar.

Ava Max finally scores her first song on the Countdown since So Am I, as Kings & Queens debuts after way too long in Hit-Bound. Although this isn’t a hit, it’s a pretty good non-hit, so I’m happy that it’s here. Ava Max sounds great (when does she not?) and the layering in the chorus really adds to that. On top of all that, it has some pretty great writing too. I like the references to chess in the bridge, and probably my favourite line is: “And you might think I'm weak without a sword/But if I had one, it'd be bigger than yours”. I love that. *9 weeks in Hit-Bound, 10 weeks on Voting Poll

Best Entrant: Kings & Queens - Ava Max

Biggest DROP!!!: The Bones - Maren Morris (-10): Aw. Really? I hate how Hits 1 gets rid of actual hits, when they have three non-hits in their top 5. I was really hoping this would do well here.

Biggest Jump: Stuck with U - Ariana Grande/Justin Bieber (+12): I guess this song is starting to rise again in pop radio? Maybe? I don’t know. It’s extremely forgettable, and I’m sure I’m just gonna forget that it’s near the top 10 by next week. #teamrainonme4dayzzzzz

Banana and 17 left the Countdown and came back to Hit-Bound this week. I probably would’ve been alright to just let go of Banana, since it’s a really weird song, and I find it ridiculous how much Hits 1 is trying to push 17 as a hit, since they refused to let it go, eventually did let it go, brought it back, had it debut the Countdown at the bottom spot, leave the next week, and now they’ve put it as the Countdown Extra to try and get it to re-enter next week. The song’s just not worth the effort, guys.

I feel like I’m gonna not like this as much in a couple of months since Hits 1 is gonna overplay the crap out of it, but at least for now, Wildflower by 5 Seconds of Summer is the best single from CALM. It’s actually quite catchy and unique, and it’s a nice upbeat change from Easier, Teeth and Old Me. I don’t love the dude saying “tell you what I like” sexily, but other than that, it’s good. Other than the lyrics. Y’know, if you just don’t fill in the gaps with your brain, it isn’t as bad. But yeah, this is good.

On the bad part of the Hit-Bound debuts this week, we have a ballad by Conan Gray of all people. I think Heather was a huge mistake. I actually quite liked Maniac, but I don’t think Conan should’ve done a ballad. He doesn’t quite have the voice for a close-to-the-mic, ASMR-type, minimalistic production song. I tried to look up what the lyrics are about, because they kind of confused me, but apparently he hasn’t specified, so everybody’s just left to be confused. He said it was based on a real life experience he had though, so I don’t know. If you want to look up the lyrics, you can, because I really don’t feel like explaining them.

If All of the Blurbs Had Their Queens on the Throne

We actually only lost one song this week, Maniac by Conan Gray. I actually quite liked the song, and although it was getting on the old side, it was definitely still good. Ah well, it’s probably gonna be on whatever they’re doing for a Year-End list this year.

Cruel Summer seems to be a flop, which I guess makes sense, since it’s not actually a single, but Hits 1 doesn’t make sense anyways, so why not make it jump into the top 10?

What is a top 4 Hot 100 hit doing in the bottom 4 on the Countdown? Yes, I am talking about Roses, and no, I will not stop complaining about it. Just make it jump already, Hits 1.

Speaking of hits that are probably too low, Like That took a hit this week after having the biggest jump last week. Logic? Pffffssshhhh, what’s that? (I hope you understood the sound that I made there, if not, just say all the letters together, and you should get it. Fun fact, you just tried it)

I hate that Moral of the Story is getting success just because of Niall. I mean come on, Hits 1. At least try to be subtle about your stanning.

Blinding Lights left the top 20 this week. If you need me, I’ll be crying in the comments section of when this first debuted.

Spyder tried to say Roddy Ricch for the first time on air today, and it was very funny. Speaking of Roddy Ricch, ROCKSTAR is in the top 20!!!

Blueberry Faygo is also in the top 20, so that’s very much fun.

Why is Oh My God back up at a new peak? Come on, bros. Alec Benjamin doesn’t deserve that, much less with this song.

RainOnMe. (We love to hear it in the top 10)

Why the heck is Before You Go back in the top 10? This song has had the weirdest run ever. Just leave already.

Last Year's #1: Old Town Road (Remix) - Lil Nas X/Billy Ray Cyrus [13/19 weeks at #1]

We got two songs that are new to the Top 40 back-to-back this week, the first one, at #38, is actually a song that I forgot to review last week, Here And Now by Kenny Chesney. As far as country songs go, this is definitely one of the better ones. I actually quite like the chorus, and the guitar sounds really good. The one big problem that I have with this song is Kenny Chesney's voice in the verses. He sounds like your basic generic country artist, and really isn't unique at all. But he sounds surprisingly good in the chorus, so you've gotta give him that. Decent debut.

Our second Top 40 debut this week is actually a full Hot 100 debut, BLACK PARADE by Beyoncé. The production's really really good in this song. It's definitely interesting, and I like all the little things that she put in the background. I'm not the biggest fan of Beyoncé though, and she's singing a little quietly in this song. The end is admittedly pretty good though, which brings this song up above Here And Now, but not enough to bring it to green.

Best T40 Debut: BLACK PARADE - Beyoncé

Biggest Drop: TROLLZ - 6ix9ine/Nicki Minaj (-33): Good. I knew this wasn't gonna last at all at #1, but I was kind of nervous it was gonna stay in the top 20 for a bit, but I'm really happy that it dropped this much this week. It didn't deserve that week at #1, it should've just gone to ROCKSTAR again.

Biggest Jump: WHATS POPPIN - Jack Harlow (+10): Ayyy! It's really nice to see this song in the top 10, and I hope this jumpstarts a good career for Jack Harlow, since this song is pretty good.

On the Verge
Be Kind - Marshmello/Halsey (OtV RE-ENTRY)
Supalonely - BENEE/Gus Dapperton

I Love My Country - Florida Georgia Line (OtV DEBUT)
Snow On Tha Bluff - J. Cole (OtV DEBUT)
After A Few - Travis Denning

Both Be Kind and GOOBA re-entered On the Verge after leaving the Top 40 this week. I'm kind of sad that Be Kind didn't stick around for much longer, since I actually quite like it, but GOOBA definitely needed to be kicked off of the Top 40.

Our first On the Verge debut this week comes from Jawsh 685 and Jason Derulo, and it's called Savage Love. I'm not sure what the Laxed - Siren Beat stuff is about, but frankly I don't care, because this song is absolutely spectacular. Honestly, I don't think Jason Derulo will ever release a bad song. He just literally can't miss. I think in the chorus for this song he's singing a bit too high for his register, but it's still really really good. I like the mix of slow stuff and upbeat stuff, and I think Jawsh did a great job there. I'm glad to be reviewing a new pop song, and this was for sure the one to do it. It's insanely catchy, and I sincerely hope it debuts Hits 1 soon, because it definitely deserves to be there.

Our next debut is Die From A Broken Heart by Maddie & Tae. Now, I don't hate this song, but the reason it's in red is because it's insanely boring. It literally numbs my mind every time I hear it. I guess their voices are fine, and although I still can't stand the country twang in people's voices, they're pretty good singers. But there's practically no production, and it's just way way too slow in my opinion. I'd prefer if this didn't debut the Top 40.

Another country song comes next, this time by... ugh. Florida Georgia Line. They're newest song I Love My Country (of course) debuts On the Verge this week. Um. This isn't bad... it's not great either. The electric guitar is probably the best part of this song, since everything else about it is just not great. I can definitely see this changing to red though in the coming weeks.

Our final debut is Snow On Tha Bluff by J. Cole. This is solid. J. Cole sounds pretty good, and I like his flow a lot, and if this had a little more production, I would definitely like this. Or rather, if this had any production. I mean... is there even a track? I can't hear it. This is another Black Lives Matter song, and the lyrics are fantastic, but the lack of production would definitely benefit this song, although his rapping is impressive, and it sounds like he did it all in one take. But The Bigger Picture is still better just because of the production. A for effort.

I'm Livin' In the Bluuuuurb and Now

We lost a few On the Verge songs this week: Heartless, Make It Rain, GO, In Between and Shotta Flow 5. The only one I'm really sad about it Heartless, because it means that it might start flopping on pop radio soon.

Why hasn't Memories left the Top 40 already? It was never good, and now it's even getting old.

I'm sad that High Fashion isn't doing better.

Hopefully Hard To Forget jumps into the top 20 soon, it's getting pretty close.

We Paid is in the top 20... really? This has to be a hit?

Rain On Me is out of the top 10. Come on, everybody.

I still like Circles, but I think that it being in the top 10 is too much.

Roses is in the top 5! I can definitely see this hitting #1 soon.

ROCKSTAR is back to #1!!! Yeet!

Kwaheri, everybody. See you all soon.
