Countdown Extra: SO DONE - The Kid LAROI

So our first debut this week comes in at #29 and a couple of months ago, we all thought that this was gonna be a Hit-Bound dropout that was only on Hit-Bound for one week. But alas, here we are as Lasting Lover by Sigala and James Arthur debuts this week. I’m really happy that this made it to the Countdown, as it’s a really good song. I’ve always liked James Arthur, but I think his vocal performance here is honestly quite good. It works surprisingly well with Sigala’s production, which is also really great. The song’s so much fun, especially the drop and I credit that entirely to Sigala. He just brought so much life to this song and I honestly just love it a lot. I hope this does really well here.

So anybody remember that movie that came out last year called Yesterday, where everybody forgot about The Beatles except for one dude, who starts recording all their songs? Yeah, I just watched that movie for the first time yesterday. The reason I’m bringing it up is because Ed Sheeran actually had a pretty prominent role in that movie and his brand new song, Afterglow debuts this week at #23. This song’s definitely solid. I like the writing here and I think Ed’s main vocal sounds good here. As I said last week, though, what keeps it from being great is the weird robotic harmonies that just feel really out of place. Still a good song though.

Best Debut: Lasting Lover - Sigala/James Arthur

Biggest DROP!!!: Laugh Now Cry Later - Drake/Lil Durk & HOLIDAY - Lil Nas X (-4): Yeah, so Hits 1’s letting rap songs on the Countdown now, but that still doesn’t really stop them from not letting them do too well, which kind of sucks. Of course, Savage and ROCKSTAR hit the top 10 and Come & Go hit #1 (even though that really wasn’t a rap song), but both of these songs should be hits here and it sucks that they’re not doing too well.

Biggest Jump: Monster - Shawn Mendes/Justin Bieber (+8): I’m really glad that this song is close to the top 10. I’d love to see it hit #1 here.

Blueberry Eyes re-entered Hit-Bound this week. No comment, I honestly don’t care.

So Hits 1 added a couple songs to Hit-Bound halfway through the weekend, so I'll add them to Hunger Games Countdown and If the Countdown Made Sense next week, but I figured I'd review them today. We're starting with some new Justin Bieber this week. It's called Anyone and it's pretty good. I'm already a pretty big fan of Justin Bieber and I think his vocal performance here is pretty good. My only little problem with it is that it takes a bit to build up, but once it does, it's great. Yeah, I hope this is a hit and I can't see it not being a hit, because it's Justin Bieber.

Next up is more Jennifer Lopez, if you remember that song Medicine with French Montana from 2019? Yeah, if you don't I definitely don't blame you. Anyways, this one's called In The Morning and it's alright. The chorus feels like it was lazily written, but the rest of the song is fine and I don't really have any problems with it. J-Lo sounds good and the production's decent too. Just not interesting enough to grab my attention.

I Will Hold On to the After-Blurb

So we lost going out and Bummerland this week. I’m very glad that going out has gone out, as it was never good and never should have been One to Watch, but did we really have to lose Bummerland? Whatever.

Speaking of Ones to Watch, we don’t have one right now. So I’m not entirely sure what to think, although it really seems like it should be Holding On.

So I just need to explain something real quick: I’m doing a challenge where I’m trying to not listen to Justin Bieber for as long as I can in 2021, just for fun… but of course, Justin chose today to release another song, Anyone, so I’m still not entirely sure what I’m gonna do about that. I may just not have an opinion on it until I lose the challenge some other way. Who knows? Maybe I won’t even make it to next week. (Update: I gave up because I couldn't just not do my best and worst lists)

Okay, why is Heather still here? Is this just Hits 1’s way of keeping it here for just long enough so that it can make 2021’s Year-End list? Although, to be fair, if they’re doing that with Bang! and Mood, I’d be alright with that.

There really wasn’t all that much movement this week, so I’m just gonna cut the blurbs here. Have a good week everybody!

  2. Your recommendation for Hits 1 is actually from 3 years ago. They wouldn't even pick that one up anyway unlike how they did for Lizzo's two songs Good As Hell, Truth Hurts and Public's Make You Mine last year for instance.
