Countdown Extra: Goosebumps (Remix) - Travis Scott/HVME

So JESSIA’s now our newest One to Watch, after iann dior, which feels like a while ago. Anyways, she debuts this week with her new song, I’m not Pretty. This song’s pretty good. It’s very catchy and the production’s pretty cool. She also sounds good here too. The only issue that I have with this song is that the lyrics are a little weird, but not too much and overall, this song is still really good. Yeah, I hope this song does well and doesn’t leave the second it stops being the One to Watch.

So Machine Gun Kelly brings his second song from his album Tickets To My Downfall onto the Countdown this week. It’s called forget me too and it features Halsey. This song’s pretty great. It’s honestly just a whole lot of fun. Personally, I think that my ex’s best friend is better, but that could definitely change. Both Machine Gun Kelly and Halsey sound pretty great here and they sound surprisingly good together. The instrumentation here is also really good and the heavy electric guitar actually fits well in my opinion. Great song; I hope this does well here.

Best Debut: forget me too - Machine Gun Kelly/Halsey

Biggest DROP!!!: What You Know Bout Love - Pop Smoke (-6): Oh, come on. Did it really need to drop from its biggest jump last week? This deserves to be a hit.

Biggest Jump: Lasting Lover - Sigala/James Arthur (+9): Wooh! Top 15 for this song, awesome! I honestly didn’t think that this would be a hit here.

*Skipped Hit-Bound, so this is technically its first time around

Yeah, so there was this Travis Scott song from way back in 2016 called goosebumps that was a pretty big hit. Then, DJ HVME (pronounced Hume) made a remix of that song. Then, Travis Scott decided to make a remix of that remix and that’s what this song is. Goosebumps by Travis Scott and HVME. I’m still not entirely sure what the difference between this song and the version with just HVME is, but whatever. This song is mediocre. Travis’ voice is pitched down weirdly, so that it’s very reminiscent of Ride It by Regard from last year and I really don’t like it. The production’s fine, but it’s nothing too interesting. This doesn’t really need to be a hit.

So there’s this new artist called Alexander 23 and he brings his new song, Cry Over Boys to Hit-Bound this week. This song’s decent. Alexander 23 sounds pretty good here, but the song overall is a little uninteresting. It doesn’t really build at all and the verses don’t have much substance to them. I still wouldn’t mind if this debuted though.

So there’s this song that I’ve known about for a bit now, because it was played on The Pulse for a bit on Pat Monahan of Train’s show. Anyways, it’s called Remember That Night? and it’s by Sara Kays. This song’s only slightly more interesting than Cry Over Boys because the chorus has a little more substance to it and it’s written pretty well. But this song can get kind of boring too.

So this is a bit of a weird situation. So we’ve known for a while that Taylor Swift was going to start re-recording all of her old albums due to ownership issues, but now she’s released the first song from her re-recorded version of Fearless, which is going to come out on April 9th. But what I didn’t realize is that she’s actually gonna be sending some of the re-recorded songs to radio. So now we have a new version of Love Story on Hit-Bound and it sounds pretty much exactly like the original. Which was totally the point and I’m quite surprised that she could get it to sound so similar, but it makes for a weird radio situation. It’s over whether this would be classified as a debut or a re-entry. I’m classifying it as a debut, because even if I classified it as a re-entry, I wouldn’t have the data to know how many weeks it’s spent on the Countdown or its peak. So I’m just classifying it as a debut. Anyways, onto the actual song. This is easily one of the best Taylor Swift songs. It’s got a cool storyline, she sounds great here (even better on the new version, because her voice has matured) and it’s quite catchy. The best part is the key change though. I’m really happy that this is here and I hope that it debuts the Countdown soon.

Best Debut: Love Story (Taylor’s Version) - Taylor Swift

So You Want Me to Forget Blurbs? Okay, Forget Blurbs Too

We lost two songs off of the Countdown this week, Deep End and Overwhelmed. I’m super glad that Deep End only spent a week on the Countdown. It was terrible and didn’t deserve to debut. As for Overwhelmed, it wasn’t that great and I don’t care that it’s gone.

Our Hit-Bound exits were Lotus Inn and Goodbye. I really don’t care that much that Lotus Inn is gone and did Goodbye really only spend one week on the Countdown? Seriously? We’ve already had two one-weekers and we're literally only on the second week of February.

Go Crazy dropped from its jump last week. Does this seriously have to flop? I mean, come on.

Ayyyy My Head & My Heart making huge gains, we love to see it.

Diamonds can leave aaaany time now.

Yeah, so for some reason, Afterglow decided to drop. I really hope it doesn’t keep dropping.

So yeah, The Weeknd did his Super Bowl performance last week and it was really good. He really used the entire stadium, which was awesome and a lot of the visuals were honestly really cool. Especially when he had all of those dancers out on the field when he was doing Blinding Lights. He did pretty much all of his big hits and he sounded great in all of them. Overall, it was just a really fantastic performance. Definitely better than last year’s (J-Lo and Shakira).

Yeah, so Treat People With Kindness is in the top 10 now. I guess it’s only a matter of time before this hits #1… that’s fine, just as long as it doesn’t stick around for too long.

Speaking of Harry Styles, Golden is back up to #2 this week. I really hope that this doesn’t hit #1 again.

A Year in Review - 2020 (Part 2)

Yeah, so I recently remembered some more stats that I wanted to do, so I figured I'd just do a part 2 to my previous Year in Review post. I'm just gonna jump right into it with our first award.

Most Entrants in a Week
I Should Probably Go To Bed - Dan + Shay (#30), my future - Billie Eilish (#28), Lose Somebody - Kygo/OneRepublic (#26), Daisies - Katy Perry (#19), Whats Poppin - Jack Harlow (#18)Heather - Conan Gray (#17), & me & ur ghost - blackbear (#5) [7 entrants] [August 8]

Cool. There were definitely some other years when this happened more than just once, but it's still cool when this happens every once in a while.

Next is some awards relating to the length of songs.

Shortest Countdown Song
CITY OF ANGELS - 24kGoldn (1:52)

Longest Countdown Song
The Hype - Twenty One Pilots (4:25)

Shortest Hit-Bound Dropout
Backyard Boy - Claire Rosinkranz (2:09)

Longest Hit-Bound Dropout
exile - Taylor Swift/Bon Iver (4:45)

Next up is just a percentage of all of the genres for the Countdown songs.

Countdown Song Genres
Upbeat Pop (37%)
Slow Pop (22%)
Rap (16%)
EDM (9%)
Pop Rock (9%)
Country (4%)
R&B (2%)
K-Pop (1%)
Latino (1%)

Upbeat Pop (predictably) is the #1 genre of the year, but I think the most notable thing here is that rap actually had 16% of all of the Countdown songs. That's insane especially compared to other years when we had little to no rap on here. Other than that, pop rock only had 9% this year, which I'm pretty sure is less than usual, especially since Hits 1 really likes pop rock. But I think that's mostly because bands like Imagine Dragons, Panic! At The Disco and Fall Out Boy didn't really release much this year.

Biggest Whiff of the Year
Life Is Good - Future/Drake

Yeah, this was released back when Hits 1 weren't huge fans of rap and even now, I'm not sure if it would be picked up.

Alright, so here's the last award that I'm giving out. It's called the Oops! I Forgot award. It goes to the most forgettable Countdown song of the year. But first, some honourable mentions:

CITY OF ANGELS - 24kGoldn
Cuz I Love You - Lizzo
Demons - Alec Benjamin
Fight - Tayla Parx/Florida Georgia Line
Funny - Zedd/Jasmine Thompson
Hate The Way - G-Eazy/blackbear
Head & Heart - Joel Corry/MNEK
I Love Me - Demi Lovato
Mad at Disney - salem ilese
Mother - Charlie Puth
my future - Billie Eilish
Nobody's Love - Maroon 5
Over Now - Calvin Harris/The Weeknd
Push My Luck - The Chainsmokers
queen of broken hearts - blackbear
Ride It - Regard
Stuck with U - Ariana Grande/Justin Bieber
Walking - Joji/Jackson Wang/Major Lazer/Swae Lee
WOW - Zara Larsson
X - Jonas Brothers/KAROL G
17 - Pink Sweat$
10/10 - Rex Orange County
100 Ways - Jackson Wang

And the award goes to...

Banana (Minisiren Remix) - Conkarah/Shaggy/DJ Fle

Yeah, don't tell me you remembered that that song existed, because you didn't.

Little thing that I forgot to do for my Hits 1's Top 30 of 2020 post. Rank the freakin' songs. I forgot to do this last year too. Anyways, here it is:

Last Year's #1: All I Want for Christmas Is You - Mariah Carey [3/5 weeks at #1]

Oh yeah, I guess it's still Christmastime. Oh boy. Anyways, this is the last week of these songs being here, so we won't have to deal with this for too long. The first song is This Christmas by Donny Hathaway and I actually quite like this song. I really like the jazz sound that this song has and Donny Hathaway sounds really good here.

Okay, so Bing Crosby has another song now, being Mele Kalikimaka with The Andrews Sisters. I find a lot of Bing Crosby's Christmas music to be pretty boring and this is no exception. I prefer almost every cover of this.

A classic is next, Blue Christmas by Elvis Presley. I quite like this song, I think Elvis works spectacularly with this song and the song itself is pretty catchy. I also really like whatever the heck the backup singers are doing. It actually fits surprisingly well with the song.

You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch by Thurl Ravenscroft is next. This song's fine. Thurl sounds decent and the song's interesting enough.

Wonderful Christmastime by Paul McCartney makes its debut this week. Again, I find this to be one of the more obscure Christmas songs.

Here Comes Santa Claus, It's Beginning to Look a Lot like Christmas and Home for the Holidays all re-entered this week. Not much to say on that one except that it was expected.

Best Debut: This Christmas - Donny Hathaway

Biggest Drop: willow - Taylor Swift (-37): Oof. Well, I guess I expected it to drop so much from its #1 debut last week, but this is still a little sad.

Biggest Jump: Run Rudolph Run - Chuck Berry (+19): Ok cool.

My Top 5 Picks
#5: Bang! - AJR
#4: Levitating - Dua Lipa/DaBaby
#3: Mood - 24kGoldn/iann dior

Little Saint Nick - The Beach Boys (#47) [1]

Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas - Michael Bublé (#49) [1]
I'll Be Home For Christmas - Bing Crosby (#50) [1]

Afterglow - Ed Sheeran (#59) [1]
Gnat - Eminem (#60) [1]
Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree - Justin Bieber (#61) [1]

Please Come Home for Christmas by the Eagles is the first On the Verge debut. This song's fine. It's not too interesting, but it's fine. Whoever's singing sounds good and the production's alright.

Yeah, so I really like Michael Jackson, and I think he had a really good voice for his age when he was younger, but oh boy, it's pretty annoying. Yeah, that's pretty much all I have to say. (Oh yeah, by the way, the song is Santa Claus Is Coming To Town by The Jackson 5)

Oh yeah, The Beach Boys existed. These guys really only have one sound and in their Christmas song, Little Saint Nick, they don't really change up that formula at all. It's fine.

I've already expressed how much I like Michael Bublé's Christmas music and Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas is definitely no exception here. I really love his voice with this music and this is a great song too.

Okay, just copy+paste everything I said about Mele Kalikimaka except with I'll Be Home For Christmas.

Oh dang, Hallelujah by Carrie Underwood and John Legend is pretty great. Both of these artists have fantastic voices and they sound pretty good together. This song is only slightly boring, but I think their voices definitely more than make up for it.

Wow, this was a while ago. Afterglow by Ed Sheeran makes its On the Verge debut this week. I really like this song. I think Ed Sheeran sounds pretty great here aside from the robotic harmonies and the production and the song as a whole are good enough to support a slower song like this. This is a pretty good song and although I personally prefer his faster stuff, I definitely don't hate these types of songs either.

Okay, so Eminem released Music To Be Murdered By - Side B on this week and Gnat debuts On the Verge this week. This song's fine. It's definitely not one of his best and can't really compare with songs like Godzilla, Love The Way You Lie or The Monster. The production's not too interesting and there's way too many COVID-19 references for me to enjoy this.

Yeah, so Justin Bieber released an Amazon Prime Music original cover of Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree and while I have Amazon Prime Music, I really don't feel like going out of my way just to listen to a Christmas song. So... yeah, no opinion.

Best Debut: Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas - Michael Bublé

On the Verge Ranking
