Countdown Extra: Hot Crush Lover - Blu DeTiger

So our first of only two debuts again this week, is a song that spent one week in Hit-Bound about two months ago. Then last month, it returned on the surveys and started getting spins on the station, putting it in the Abyss, and now it's finally here! It's Chosen by Blxst, Tyga and Ty Dolla $ign, which is a song that I've really been enjoying lately. This is honestly just a very solid melodic rap song. Everybody sounds really good here, and delivers very solid verses. My favourite has still got to be Ty Dolla $ign's verse, but I've always been a pretty big fan of Ty, so that's not too surprising. Tyga sounds pretty good here, and definitely delivers one of the better verses that I've heard from him. Between this and Freaky Deaky, I may actually be changing my opinion on Tyga. Easily the best part of this song is the chorus, though. Blxst sounds great, and it's so catchy. That awesome chorus mixed with the really fun guitar riff in the production is simply fantastic. Speaking of the production, it was really well-executed. It doesn't evolve much, but that doesn't really bother me, because the beat is just that fun to listen to. I don't see this doing spectacularly well here, but I hope it lasts for a bit, at least.

Our final debut this week, coming in just one spot up at #29 is a song that I'm honestly surprised Hits 1 decided to push, Sunroof by Nicky Youre and dazy. This really seemed like it would just be one of those songs that Hits 1 keeps in Hit-Bound for a couple weeks, then lets go of, and it was that way for a bit, but then they brought it back the next week, and about a month and a half later decided to include it on the surveys and actually start pushing the song. Which is weird, but I'm not about to complain at all, because this song is great. Nicky Youre isn't a particularly great singer, but the song is just so catchy, and the production is super well-done too. As a whole, this is just a really fun song that I can't get enough of right now. Seriously, the whole vibe of the song is just so infectious. I'd love to see this last for a bit here.

Best Debut: Chosen - Blxst/Tyga/Ty Dolla $ign

Biggest Drop: Woman - Doja Cat (-7): Even though I never particularly loved this song, I'm still sad that it never really got a shot here, because Doja really deserves that, and this is one of her better songs. Oh, well.

Biggest Jump: COMPLETE MESS - 5 Seconds of Summer (+9): Ok, I'm fine with this for now, but the song's already starting to get slightly annoying, so I'd rather not have it hit #1.

So Alec Benjamin is back with a new album, apparently, and so today he brings a new single, Speakers. This song's fine. I still laugh at how bad the "o-o-old" part sounds, but it doesn't come back often enough to get annoying, so it's fine. I like how much the production evolves here, it's pretty well-done. The chorus swells quite nicely, and Alec sounds pretty good throughout. So yeah, this isn't really anything special or all that memorable, but it's decent.

Next up is a collaboration that I got decently excited about, psychofreak by Camila Cabello and WILLOW. I know I don't have the best track record with WILLOW, but I actually do like her. t r a n s p a r e n t s o u l just wasn't really my thing, but she was the only saving grace of emo girl, so it balances out. Then we have Meet Me At Our Spot, which is just great. Anyways, Camila and WILLOW have pretty good chemistry here, and their voices actually blend surprisingly well, even though they have very different voices. The chorus is super solid here, and I like how Camila kept the latino vibe that she's been working with lately, but also mixed in some more pop elements for this one. Yeah, great song, I'd love to see this do well here, although I don't think it'll be as popular as Bam Bam.

Well, Lizzo is back yet again with a new song, About Damn Time. I don't really have too much to say about this one, it's just a very solid Lizzo bop. I'd love to see this be a hit, and I think it will be, and not flop like Rumors did for whatever reason.

Next up is Charlie Puth's follow-up to Light Switch, That's Hilarious. I'm kinda conflicted on this one. It starts off kinda slow, but picks up as the song goes on, which I don't mind, it was executed pretty well. But I don't really know if Charlie Puth is the kind of guy that can pull of a slow song. I don't know, just something about his voice. There were some... interesting decisions that were made in the chorus "ha HA ha", but the chorus as a whole is really good, and the melodies are great. So yeah... I guess I like this, but there are some elements that I definitely don't. I still enjoy it, though, so it's going in "good".

Lauren Spencer-Smith is next, with her second single after Fingers Crossed. This song is called Flowers, and it's quite good. Fingers Crossed has started to get annoying, so I'm glad to have something else from Lauren to listen to. I agree with Waffle that she's oversinging less in this song, which is nice, but I don't find this song quite as memorable as Fingers Crossed. I would argue that it's better, though. The melodies are great, Lauren sounds fantastic here, and the simple piano production fits really well. Overall, there's no way this is gonna be a hit, but it's a very solid second impression of Lauren, and she definitely has potential.

Up next is Jack Harlow, the mOSt cHarISmAtiC RapPeR eVEr. Yeah, WHATS POPPIN had a great, fun chorus and INDUSTRY BABY was amazing because Lil Nas X, but I've never thought that Jack Harlow is that interesting of a rapper. I really like his flows, and he does a really good job of switching up flows, but I just wish his voice was more interesting to listen to. He kinda leans into that here, though, because First Class is pretty chill. I really like the Fergie sample used in the chorus, he interpolates it really well in the song. Overall, this would be good if Jack had a more interesting voice, but as is, it's fine.

We lost let you (again), sunburn and make up sex this week. I'm really sad that let you's gone, because it's such a good song. I can't really remember what sunburn sounds like, so whatever, and make up sex was great, so I'm also sad it's gone.

I Got My Head Out the Blurb-roof

We lost Closer and Sacrifice this week, which kinda sucks, because they were both great songs. Closer deserved better.

How did I'm Tired jump? I'm sure nobody wants this.

Also, for whatever reason, As It Was dropped four spots off its debut last week... hunh? I'm sure this will be short-lived, but still.

Out of Time, 2step and House On Fire all got really big jumps this week, which is great. All of the songs are quite good.

Bam Bam also got a pretty good jump, which is nice to see. It's been growing on me (as I think has been the case with literally everyone).

NO, she's all i wanna be did NOT just drop five spots.

Boyfriend and Dancing Feet both jumped up six spots this week, and I'm really happy about the latter. It's kinda starting to flop everywhere, but Hits 1 loves all things Jonas, so they might decide to make this a thing.

And, as predicted, Numb Little Bug dropped. Come on, Hits 1. Just let this have #1.

Light Switch dethroned Enemy this week, and while I'm kinda sad that Enemy isn't #1 anymore, Light Switch is still a very solid song, so it's ok.

  4. Also, Dancing Feet isnt flopping everywhere else, in fact, its rising in AT40.

    1. It actually is out of the top 40 according to Mediabase. The AT40 show isn’t the most accurate because their shows are produced from charts used 2-3 weeks before they air, and also because there’s still a decent amount of recurrent songs used in the AT40 show, while Mediabase goes primarily off of only current songs. In the published update tonight Dancing Feet should be purged though.
