Week of August 7, 2021 - Ed Sheeran (1)

Hey, everyone! I only have one announcement this week, and it's that I've decided to discontinue the 2021 Weekend Countdown Olympics, because I don't have much time left to finish it, and I don't have nearly enough motivation to finish it. This week's countdown was good. We have a lot of good new songs to talk about, which is awesome, and there was a decent-enough amount of movement. Here are our two exits for this week!

Countdown Extra: Fancy Like - Walker Hayes

Our first brand-new debut this week is INDUSTRY BABY by Lil Nas X and Jack Harlow at #30. This is quite a good song. It's not my favourite song from either artist, but it's still really enjoyable. The production is really cool, and the horn riff is great. Both artists have great verses here, and the hook is great too. It's also over 3:30, which is awesome. It's just slightly forgettable, but that may just be because it's new and I haven't heard it enough yet. I hope it sticks around, though.

Silk Sonic bring their second song to the Weekend Countdown this week, Skate. This song is much better than Leave The Door Open. It's a lot more upbeat and funky, and I like that much more than the slower, croon-y style of LTDO. The chorus to this song is quite catchy, and both Anderson .Paak and Bruno Mars sound good here. Overall, this is a very solid song, and I'd love to see it do well here and everywhere else.

Best Debut: Skate - Silk Sonic

Biggest Drop: MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name) - Lil Nas X (-8): This makes a lot of sense with the entry of INDUSTRY BABY, and I'm not disappointed that it's leaving, because it had a very solid run here.

Biggest Jump: Saturday - Twenty One Pilots (+9): Wow, two in a row! This song's fantastic, and I'd love to see it become a top 5 hit soon, and I can definitely see that happening.

Our first debut this week comes from a band called Against The Current and their new song, jump. This song's fine. Whoever's singing here sounds good for the most part, and the instrumentation's alright, even though it feels a little too loud. It sounds very early-2010s with the wall of sound. Overall, this song's fine, but I don't really see it becoming a hit.

All Time Low bring us yet another song, this time pairing up with another band, Pale Waves, on their new song, PMA. This song's quite good. I wouldn't necessarily call it ATL's best, but it's better than Once In A Lifetime from earlier this year. The instrumentation's better, and it's nice to have a new voice here (the person from Pale Waves). Overall, this is a good song, but I also don't see this becoming a hit.

So, Olivia Rodrigo brings us her fourth single from her album SOUR today. This one's called traitor, and I'd say it's her third-best single so far. It's definitely not my favourite from SOUR that hasn't been released as a single yet (that would likely go to jealousy, jealousy or hope ur ok), but it's still great. Olivia sounds fantastic here, and the writing is amazing as always. The production evolves really nicely here, and I really like the last chorus. Overall, this is a very good song and I'd love to see it hit #1 on Hits 1. It definitely has a good shot, considering drivers license, deja vu and good 4 u all hit #1 too.

blackbear returns this week with a new song, @ my worst. I've always loved blackbear's voice, and this is definitely no exception. The best part of this song, though, is how it seamlessly transitions from the darker verses, and the more major chorus. It creates a really cool effect, and I really love it. Not many artists try to do something new melodically, so I really appreciate this. Overall, this is a really great song, and I love it.

Finally, we have a much more cheery song than I was expecting, everything sucks by vaultboy. I've never heard of this guy, but he sounds really good here. The production's honestly really cool, and it evolves really well. This is a pretty enjoyable song (even if it's really really short), and I hope it does well here.

We lost a bunch of Hit-Bound songs this week, Thot S***, Heartbreak Anniversary, Permission to Dance, t r a n s p a r e n t s o u l and Beggin'. Thot S*** wasn't that good, so I'm not so disappointed that it's gone, Heartbreak Anniversary stuck around for way longer than it needed to, so I'm also not disappointed. Permission to Dance was good, but I also didn't care about it too much. t r a n s p a r e n t s o u l was never good, so I'm glad it's gone, and Beggin' is good, so I'm a little sad it's gone.

Oh, Blurb to Me, Baby

Our two exits this week were Say So and Build a B****. Say So was great, and I'm really sad that it left so soon, but Build a B**** was always pretty bad, so I'm quite happy that it's gone.

Memory had a pretty big jump this week, which makes me happy.

Renegade also got a big boost, which is great, because it's grown on me.

Shy Away took a big hit, but I don't really care, because Saturday's up to #7, and it's much better.

Love Again's back up to #14 this week, so its "biggest drop" last week meant pretty much nothing.

Wow, deja vu's really grown on me since its release. I actually find myself enjoying it now.

Butter's back in the top 10, which is fine.

And finally, good 4 u dropped off of the #1 spot. :( Even though it's spent the last nine weeks at #1, I'm still really disappointed that it isn't #1 again. It was replaced by Bad Habits, so that's good, but it's still sad, and I'd appreciate it if it didn't leave ridiculously quickly like drivers license did.
