Last Year's #1: Moral of the Story - Ashe/Niall Horan [6/6 weeks at #1]

Countdown Extra: Paralyzed - Sueco

Before we get into our four debuts, we see the return of Essence by WizKid, Justin Bieber and Tems at #30. I'm totally fine with this being back, as it's a good song, but I still don't see it lasting very long here (again).

So, three out of four of our debuts this week dropped out of Hit-Bound last week (unfortunately, none of them are Ghost), with the first being justified by Kacey Musgraves. I actually really like this song. I don't generally like Kacey's voice, in fact, I strongly dislike Rainbow, but this is pretty good. She sounds quite good here, and it helps that the song's got some pop production. I like the catchy chorus here, and while the verses aren't great, there's plenty in the song that makes up for it. I'd love to see this become a hit here, that would be great.

Next up, coming in at #28, we have Sheesh! by Surfaces and Tai Verdes. Now, before we get into this song, I just have to address that I absolutely hate the "sheeeesh" meme, so that could definitely factor into me not really liking this. Now, onto, the actual song, I think this song is fine, although I'm not a huge fan of it. I hate the high note "sheesh" in the chorus, it just feels really out of place, and the dude from Surfaces doesn't sound so good either. But, on the more positive side of things, this song's pretty fun, and Tai has a great verse here. I'd really rather not have this become a hit here, but it's the sort of Gen-Z TikTok meme song that will likely do pretty well here.

We see the solo return of the Jonas Brothers this week, after they released What A Man Gotta Do and X and dipped about a year ago. This new song's called Who's In Your Head, and it's pretty good. It's nice and catchy, it's got some upbeat and groovy production, and both Nick and Joe sound great here. My only criticism is that it feels really safe, and kind of like a Sucker - Part 6. But, a good song is still a good song, so I'm totally fine with this being here, and I'm okay with it becoming a big hit here, which it inevitably will be.

All the way up at #14, for some freaking reason, Cold Heart by Elton John, Dua Lipa and PNAU debuts this week. I don't really like this song at all. I've never been a huge fan of Elton John's voice, and there's really no difference here. I also don't really like PNAU's production here, and I'm not entirely sure why, it's just not really my style of production. On top of that, the song's really repetitive. Dua Lipa sounds good here, but it's really not enough to save the song. Also, it's interesting to note that the official title of this song is Cold Heart - PNAU Remix, but there's no version without PNAU. Anyways, I hope this doesn't become a hit.

So, Hits 1 switched to a 24kGoldn remix of Tai Verdes' A-O-K this week, which is good, because this version's better than the original. I still don't really like it, as all the issues from the original song are still here, but now there's a pretty good verse from 24kGoldn here, so that boosts it up to "mediocre".

Best Debut: justified - Kacey Musgraves

Biggest Drop: Beggin' - Måneskin (-9): Aw. I loved seeing this song up in the top 10, but I guess it was never really destined to be a hit here, so it's okay.

Biggest Jump: Fancy Like - Walker Hayes (+6):

Before we get into our eight(!) Hit-Bound debuts, Love Tonight dropped out of the Countdown and found its way back to Hit-Bound. I'm happy that it's not on the Countdown anymore, but why is it still here?

First up, we have an artist that had a couple hits last year, but hasn't been on Hits 1 since, Trevor Daniel. This week he returns with his new song, Alone, and this song's solid. Trevor sounds quite good here, and I think his voice fits the song pretty well. On top of that, the chorus is pretty catchy, but the production's kind of basic, and the song as a whole is pretty forgettable. Do I think this will be a third hit for Trevor? Probably not, but you never know.

Next up, we have a very surprising collaboration that sounds awful on paper, but actually works quite well. It's Coldplay and BTS, on a song together called My Universe. I have no clue how, but both of the band's sounds mix really well together, and the flip-flop between Chris Martin and a random BTS member in the verses works really well. In addition, it's got some very Higher Power-esque production, except done a bit better than in that song. The chorus is super catchy, and Chris sounds great in it. The only part I don't really love is the rapping bridge from j-hope, but other than that, this is a great song that I'd love to see become a hit.

Replacing Woman this week, we have yet another Doja Cat song that blew up on TikTok. This song's called Get Into It (Yuh), and while I think it's better than the aforementioned song, it's still not great. The only part in the song that I like is the verses, because Doja sounds quite good in them, but the chorus is really annoying, and there could definitely be more layers in the production. I wonder if Hits 1 will keep switching between having a different Doja Cat non-single on Hit-Bound each week, or if they'll just stick with this song. I guess we'll see next week.

Remember bbno$? He had a feature on that song with Y2K that missed Hits 1 from earlier last year, Lalala? Anyways, even if you don't, he's here now on a song with Rich Brian, called edamame. This is one of those songs that I feel like I should hate, but I just can't seem to. It's honestly just so much fun, and both bbno$ and Rich Brian sound quite good here, and the chorus is pretty catchy. Yeah, overall I'd say that this is fine? I'm not really sure, it's gonna take a few more listens to determine whether I like this song or not.

Next up, we have WILLOW's second song on Hit-Bound this year, except this time, it's with a group called THE ANXIETY, which consists of her and Tyler Cole. This song's called Meet Me At Our Spot. This is a good little song. I'd definitely say that WILLOW's the worst part of this song, as I'm still not really a fan of her voice, but Tyler Cole sounds amazing here, and the song as a whole's pretty fun. The production's nice and chill, which fits the song really well. Overall, I'd be totally fine if this became a hit.

Hey, everybody! Guess who's back? Everybody's favourite rapper, Pitbuuuuuuuuul. In all honesty though, I can't seem to dislike Pitbull despite all of my best efforts. He's just so much fun, it's ridiculous. Anyways, he's back on a song called I Feel Good with Anthony Watts and DJ White Shadow. This song's pretty good. Anthony Watts' pre-chorus is nothing short of amazing, Pitbull's rapping is... fine, and DJ White Shadow does a decent job with the production. Overall, I just can't find anything about this that I dislike.

This week also sees the return of Giveon, after Heartbreak Anniversary dropped out a couple of months ago (but still finds itself in "the abyss"), with a new song called For Tonight. This is easily my favourite new song this week. This song is leagues better than Heartbreak Anniversary (even though that song grew on me recently). The production actually evolves pretty nicely, Giveon sounds incredible here, and the melodies here are fantastic. I already love this song, and I've only heard it twice now, so I really hope it becomes a hit.

Tiësto also sees a return this week, with a new song with KAROL G, Don't Be Shy. This song's fine. KAROL G sounds good here, Tiësto's production is fine, but I find myself pretty bored with this song after about twenty seconds. I'm gonna go listen to For Tonight again now rather than talk about this song more.

There are also eight Hit-Bound dropouts this week (:/), being Drive You Home, Another Song About Tequila (again), Woman, Steal My Love, Shivers, ONE OF ME, Girls Want Girls and Chasing Stars. Drive You Home actually grew on me, so I'm kinda sad to see it go. ASAT was decent, but I don't care that it's gone. Woman was bad, so I'm happy it's gone. Steal My Love was very forgettable, and only here for a week, so I don't care. I have no clue why Shivers left and is plummeting in airplay, as it's actually becoming a pretty big hit. ONE OF ME was great, but I get it, as it wasn't a single. Girls Want Girls was never good, and also didn't turn out to be the big single, so I'm glad it's gone. And, Chasing Stars was forgettable, so I don't care that it's gone.

I Be Like Bluuurbs!

Okay, I've decided that I find Happier Than Ever kinda great. I have no clue how, but I've been really enjoying it lately.

I swear, if Rumors doesn't get a big jump next week, I'm done.

Nice to see @ my worst all the way up at #16. I'd like to see this become a hit, even a small one, on here.

everything sucks is in the top 15, which is pretty cool. I still like the song.

Memory's at #13 now, which is nice to see.

For whatever reason, traitor is down to #11 this week, which I really don't get. Maybe it won't hit #1.

Saturday found its way back into the top 5, which is great. #Saturdayfornumberonenextweek

And finally, we lost four songs this week (not counting Love Tonight), Way 2 Sexy, Hurricane, People Watching and Skate. Way 2 Sexy was awful, so I'm very glad that it seems to be gone for good. Hurricane was great, so I'm honestly pretty sad that it never really got a run here. People Watching was fine, but extremely forgettable, so I don't care that it's gone. As for Skate, it should've been a much bigger song than it was, and I don't get why it flopped.

Week of September 18, 2021 - The Kid LAROI/Justin Bieber (2)

Hey, everyone! We had a pretty boring week here, and I don't really have much to talk about. Although, we got eight Hit-Bound entrants without a single song from Hit-Bound last week moving onto the Countdown, so... I bet you can guess where all those songs went (well, minus Hurricane and I am not a woman, which both pulled Sunday Bests last week).

Countdown Extra: Record Player - Daisy the Great/AJR

I guess Hits 1 feels the need to have every Hot 100 #1 on Hits 1, so for that reason, Way 2 Sexy by Drake, Future and Young Thug debuts the Countdown at #30 this week. Remind me why this is the biggest song from Certified Lover Boy again? Basically, this is a song that samples Right Said Fred's I'm Too Sexy, an awful song from 1992, and puts a bad Future hook on top of it with a mediocre Future verse and a bad Young Thug verse there too. Oh, yeah, also Drake barely has a presence here, even though he's the lead artist on this song. Now, that being said, his verse is actually quite good, but it's not nearly enough to save the song from being awful. Also, this song is way too long for what it is. I hope this flops.

Biggest Drop: You - Regard/Troye Sivan/Tate McRae (-6): Nice to see this moving out, as I think it's been here for just a tad too long. I haven't really gotten sick of it, but there are better songs that could be here instead.

Biggest Jump: traitor - Olivia Rodrigo (+12): Nice to see this all the way up at #8. I have no doubts that this will dethrone STAY for the #1 position in the coming weeks.

i hope ur miserable until ur dead - Nessa Barrett [3]

So, before we get into our six new Hit-Bound songs, we have two songs making their return to Hit-Bound this week, Another Song About Tequila and i hope ur miserable until ur dead. I'm happy that both of these songs are back, as Another Song About Tequila is decent, and only lasted a week, and i hope ur miserable is great, and deserves to debut.

Our first new song is by somebody named Sueco, with a song called Paralyzed. I would like this song if it wasn't for Sueco's voice. He really just doesn't sound good at all here. Even though I like the instrumentation, and the melodies are great, I can't really get over his voice. There's no way this is gonna debut.

So, Lil Nas X released his debut album, MONTERO yesterday, and, I'm gonna be honest, I've listened to it twice now, and I freaking love this album. Every track is incredible, honestly, there isn't a single miss here. He has some bops on it, some heavier songs, and even some rock-sounding songs. Tie that all together with Lil Nas X's great voice, and his unapologetically LGBTQ+ lyrics, and you just have one hell of an album. Some of the songs that stuck out for me were; DEAD RIGHT NOW, ONE OF ME (which I'll talk about more in a bit), LOST IN THE CITADEL, TALES OF DOMINICA, VOID, LIFE AFTER SALEM, AM I DREAMING, and this next Hit-Bound debut, THATS WHAT I WANT. This song's a banger and a half. The hook's extremely catchy, and the song's been stuck in my head all day. On top of that, there's some super fun production and Lil Nas X sounds great here. The song's just so upbeat, and it's great for radio. I'm super excited to see this song become the hit that it deserves to be.

Ugh, did we really need another Doja Cat song on Hits 1 (or on mainstream pop in general)? I'm getting a little sick of hearing Doja's stuff on the radio, and Woman really isn't much different. Yeah, I don't really like this song. I find the chorus really annoying, and she doesn't sound good in it. Now, I do really like her rapping verse, but it's not enough to save the song from being bad. I hope this is the last single from Planet Her, because I need a break from Doja Cat.

Well, Dan + Shay get their first song on Hits 1 since I Should Probably Go To Bed last Summer with Steal My Love this week. This is a fun little song. Both of the guys sound quite good here, and the plucky, happy, production fits the song really nicely. The chorus is nice and fun, and kind of catchy. I'm not entirely sure if I see this becoming a hit, but it's welcome here for now.

We have the second song from Lil Nas X's album debuting Hit-Bound this week next, ONE OF ME featuring Elton John. When I heard that Elton John had a feature on MONTERO, I didn't think that the song would be good at all, because, Lil Nas X and Elton John's voices probably wouldn't mesh very well together, but luckily, Elton doesn't sing in this song, he just contributes piano (pretty well, might I add). Anyways, this actually turned out to be my favourite from the album for the time being. For one thing, the writing is awesome. It's pretty much him singing from his haters' perspective, which is pretty cool. On top of that, it's got some darker production with an awesome beat, which fits the song really well. The chorus is really good, and Lil Nas X is singing in the range that suits his voice the best, so he sounds amazing throughout the song. I'd love to see this become a hit (even though I'm pretty sure it's not a single).

Finally, we have a new single from the Jonas Brothers called Who's In Your Head. I'm glad that we have another upbeat song from the JoBros, because although Leave Before You Love Me was good, it got boring after a bit. Now, I like this new song, but it feels very safe. It's essentially just a less interesting version of Sucker, similar to how most of their singles have been so far. I'd like to see something similar to Don't Throw it Away from their album Happiness Begins to be released as a single, because that song was kind of different, and it was really good. Anyways, this is still good, but I feel like it could be much better.

As for our Hit-Bound Dropouts, *sighs*, we have Cold Heart, Ghost, justified, Don't Go, Change My Clothes and Sheesh!. Cold Heart was never good, so I'm glad it's gone (even though it's definitely not gone). Ghost was amazing, so I hope it comes back sooner rather than later. justified was pretty good, and deserved more. I'm not disappointed about Don't Go, because it wasn't good. Change My Clothes was decent, and I actually would've liked to see it become a hit, and Sheesh! wasn't good, so I'm glad it's gone.

I'm Too Sexy for These Blurbs

We only lost one Countdown song this week, 90s Kids. This song was good, and it stayed here for a surprisingly long time, so I'm not about to complain about its run.

However, I am gonna complain that Love Tonight jumped. I mean, seriously. How is this still here?

I swear, every time I like a Billie Eilish song, it flops. Why can't Happier Than Ever jump just a bit?

Yeah, so I've decided that I don't like Need To Know. It's just so annoying, and I skip it nearly every time it comes on.

How in the world is Rumors still in the bottom 10? That makes absolutely no sense, even for Hits 1 standards.

Cool to see everything sucks getting a decent-sized jump this week. I wonder how long it'll stay here for.

Yes, I'm going to complain every single time that Fancy Like doesn't drop.

A-O-K got a big jump to #7, which I'm not too happy about. I almost like the song less now that the 24kGoldn remix is out, and Hits 1 is sticking with the original.

Wow, so many changes in the top 6.

I'm genuinely surprised that STAY managed to hold the #1 spot, but I'm more than happy about that, because this song is amazing and definitely deserves to be at #1.

Countdown Extra: Sheesh! - Surfaces/Tai Verdes

So our first debut, at #30, pulled a Sunday Best this week. It's Hurricane by Kanye West, The Weeknd and Lil Baby. I talked about this last week, so I don't really feel the need to go into too much detail here, but this song is great. The Weeknd sounds amazing here, Lil Baby's verse is actually quite good, and Kanye also sounds pretty good here too. The production's pretty good and does a good job of tying the whole song together. Overall, this is a great song, and I'd love to see it do well here.

Lastly, we have Clinton Kane getting his second song on the Weekend Countdown with I GUESS I'M IN LOVE debuting at #28 this week. I've been a big fan of Clinton Kane's music, both Fix It to Break It and CHICKEN TENDIES were great, and this song is definitely no exception. It's another ballad, except this time with happier lyrics. I think Clinton sounds amazing throughout this song, and the production's evolution throughout the song is just incredible. By the end, when all the instruments have kicked in, it makes for a breathtaking last chorus. I have no criticisms here, this is just an amazing song that deserves to be here.

Best Debut: I GUESS I'M IN LOVE - Clinton Kane (but it's very close)

Biggest Drop: 90s Kids - Jax, good 4 u - Olivia Rodrigo & A-O-K - Tai Verdes (-4): Wow. I'm surprised 90s Kids is still here, as two songs have gone through the complete One to Watch cycle since it was the One to Watch. As for good 4 u, it was great, and had an amazing run here, so I'm not too disappointed that it's leaving. A-O-K was never good, so I'm glad it's dropping (unless they switch to the 24kGoldn remix next week. Then I might change my mind).

Biggest Jump: INDUSTRY BABY - Lil Nas X (+11): Hey, nice to see this getting a good jump again. I'd love for this to stay in the top 10 for a while.

Well, this first Hit-Bound debut was awfully unexpected. About two weeks ago, AJR remixed a song from 2018 called The Record Player Song by Daisy the Great, and now this new song is just called Record Player. I've really taken a dive into AJR's discography since All My Favorite Songs debuted Hit-Bound a while ago, and now I'm pretty familiar with all of their songs, and I'd call them one of my favourite bands. So yeah, I really like this song. I don't think it's quite as good as the aforementioned song, as I'm not a huge fan of Daisy the Great here, but the song's ridiculously catchy, Jack's verses are great, and the production is really cool. Overall, I'd love to see this become a hit, although I doubt it will.

Next up, we have Alesso, Marshmello and James Bay all on one song together called Chasing Stars. The last time James Bay was on Hits 1 was with Let It Go, I believe. Anyways, this is a solid song. I think James Bay sounds great here, and the slower verses really suit his voice here. My only issue with this song is that the drop doesn't fit the song whatsoever. It sounds like a Marshmello drop that would fit better in something like Come & Go rather than this Midnight-esque song. Other than that, though, the song's decent.

Remember Monsta X? They've had a couple Hit-Bound dropouts now, one from 2019 and one from 2020. Will this new song, One Day become their dropout from 2021? Yeah, probably. Now, I'm not at all saying that this is a bad song, in fact, I think the song's pretty great, but I doubt it'll become a pop hit. Anyways, moving on to the actual song, this is pretty much a better version of the song I just talked about. It's got slower verses, but it picks up a lot in the chorus with some bigger instrumentation. All the guys from Monsta X sound pretty great here, and I really love the chorus, and the instrumentation in it's pretty great. My one and only issue with it is that I think it's about a minute too short. It could've used a bridge and another chorus, but it's fine.

The last time Skrillex worked with Justin Bieber was on Where Are U Now from 2015, I think. Anyways, today, they return with Don Toliver on a song called Don't Go. Yeah, I'm not loving this song. My biggest issue with it is that I find the chorus kind of annoying. I don't think Justin Bieber sounds bad here, but I just don't think the hook fits with his voice. On top of that, Don Toliver's verse isn't that good. I've never really liked Don Toliver, and Lemonade was really just a fluke, as Internet Money just made an instrumental that meshed really well with his voice. As for the production, it's not enough to save the song. I'd prefer if this didn't become a hit.

Ed Sheeran releases the third song from his upcoming album = this week, this one being called Shivers. This song is so good. I genuinely think that this could be the next Shape of You. It's just so catchy and fun, with a freaking amazing instrumental. The strings here compliment the song so well that without them, the song would feel empty. Throw in Ed Sheeran's great voice, and you just have an amazing song that deserves to be a huge hit. I have no doubts that this will debut very soon.

Our last new Hit-Bound song this week is Angel Baby by Troye Sivan. I just want to address something before I get into the actual song, that single cover is making me uncomfortable. Anyways, this song's fine. It's kind of forgettable, but I'd say it's a good song with some good melodies right until the point when it does the "my angel, angel, baby, angel" part. I'm not sure why, but I just can't stand that part. Troye Sivan still sounds quite good here though, so overall, this is decent.

Reckless by Madison Beer re-entered Hit-Bound this week, which kind of sucks, because it's started to fade on me, and we probably could've had some other, better songs come take its spot instead.

We lost five Hit-Bound songs, Essence, Another Song About Tequila, t r a n s p a r e n t s o u l (again), seaside_demo and Sweet Dream (again). I'm not too disappointed that Essence is gone, because it's kind of forgettable. I never expected Another Song About Tequila to debut, but I kind of thought it would last more than one week in Hit-Bound. t r a n s p a r e n t s o u l is still getting played outside of Hit-Bound, so I'm not convinced that it's gone. seaside_demo was decent, but kind of forgettable, so I don't care that it's gone, and Sweet Dream was good, but it was past its peak in pop radio, so this makes sense.

Best Hit-Bound Debut: Shivers - Ed Sheeran

And Darlin', This Is More Than Any Blurbs I Felt Before

We lost two songs this week, New Normal and Our Song. New Normal was great, but it was never destined to be a hit, so I don't care that it's gone. As for Our Song, I feel like it had a better run that it probably should've. But, I mean... we all know why that was. Oh, yeah! I just remembered! This is the first time we haven't had a One Direction member on either the Countdown or Hit-Bound since over two years ago, August 31st, 2019.

I definitely expected I am not a woman, I'm a god to jump a lot more than it did, but hey, it's only its second week.

Yeah, I've decided that I actually like Happier Than Ever now, especially because there's a radio edit on Spotify now that edits out the first half of the song.

Bruh, why is Rumors still so low? I know that it jumped, but it's still way too low for how big a hit it is.

I'm kind of surprised that @ my worst hasn't moved at all since its debut, but hey, it's not dropping.

Oh, no. Fancy Like is actually becoming a hit. It's now in the top 10 on the Hot 100, it debuted on the Pop Songs chart on Billboard, and now it's at #14 on the Countdown. Why?

Ooh, Beggin's at #8 though. That's awesome, I didn't really expect it to do well here.

Saturday dropped out of the top 5 after entering it last week, which kind of sucks, but it's only at #6, so that's fine (also, that concert that tøp did on Alt Nation yesterday was awesome).

Well... we have a new #1. And it's STAY! This becomes both artist's first #1s. Yeah, you heard that right. This is Justin Bieber's first #1 on the Weekend Countdown. That's long overdue if you ask me. Anyways, I'm super happy that this is at #1, because it definitely deserves it, and it isn't one of the three artists that they've had at #1 this year (if you don't count the #1 runs that were in both 2020 and 2021). I hope that this manages to stay (haha) at #1 for quite a while... or, at least, until Love Again gets there.

One thing that I went into last week's post with every intention of mentioning before I completely forgot is that Imagine Dragons released a new album called Mercury - Act 1 last week. In my opinion, this is the best album they've released since Smoke + Mirrors. Every song is so different and unique, and it's awesome. Some of my favourites are #1, Giants, No Time For Toxic People, My Life and Wrecked. This is a great album that I highly recommend you listen to. It's entirely probable that you won't like it, though, and that's fine.
